| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, a | ||||||
3 | 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is currently celebrating | ||||||
4 | its 130th anniversary; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre was first unveiled to great | ||||||
6 | acclaim on December 9, 1889 in an evening featuring a | ||||||
7 | performance by legendary opera singer Adelina Patti and an | ||||||
8 | impassioned dedication speech by President Benjamin Harrison; | ||||||
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Auditorium Theatre has | ||||||
11 | been an artistic venue for all people, regardless of race, | ||||||
12 | creed, or income; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Due to its cultural and historic prominence, the | ||||||
14 | Auditorium Theatre possesses the distinction as both a National | ||||||
15 | Historic Landmark and a Designated Chicago Landmark; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Chicago's status as a world-class city and a | ||||||
17 | destination for sublime cultural experiences has been shaped, | ||||||
18 | in part, by the Auditorium Theatre's contributions throughout | ||||||
19 | the years, including the theatre's ascendancy in the wake of | ||||||
20 | the Great Chicago Fire and its role in securing Chicago as the | ||||||
21 | location for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893; and

1 | WHEREAS, Over 300,000 patrons visit the Auditorium Theatre | ||||||
2 | each year, representing diverse backgrounds and a wide array of | ||||||
3 | cultural perspectives; and

4 | WHEREAS, Throughout the 2019-2020 season, the Auditorium | ||||||
5 | Theatre is demonstrating its commitment to diversity and | ||||||
6 | inclusion by presenting an eclectic array of exceptional | ||||||
7 | programming so that all people from surrounding communities | ||||||
8 | will have the opportunity to find inspiration, entertainment, | ||||||
9 | and enjoyment through these varied artistic experiences; and

10 | WHEREAS, The Auditorium Theatre was recently awarded the | ||||||
11 | League of Historic American Theatres' Outstanding Historic | ||||||
12 | Theatre Award in recognition of its substantial contributions | ||||||
13 | to arts and culture and its profound historic significance; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, It is important to celebrate the Auditorium | ||||||
15 | Theatre's unparalleled history and incomparable tradition; | ||||||
16 | therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that in recognition of the | ||||||
19 | Auditorium Theatre's initial unveiling, we declare December 9, | ||||||
20 | 2019 "Auditorium Theatre Day" in the State of Illinois, and we | ||||||
21 | acknowledge this historic landmark's commitment to artistic |

1 | excellence and community inclusion while celebrating the | ||||||
2 | artists, performers, world leaders, authors, musicians, and | ||||||
3 | cultural icons who have graced the auditorium's stage and | ||||||
4 | enthralled tens of millions of patrons over the years; and be | ||||||

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the Auditorium Theatre as a symbol of our respect | ||||||
8 | and esteem.
