SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
to learn of the death of Sister Marianna Kosior O.S.F. of the
Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, who passed away on December
11, 2021; and
WHEREAS, Sister Marianna, the former Gloria Kosior, was
born to Albert and Anne Skrabala Kosior in Whiting, Indiana on
August 4, 1922; she entered the Congregation on September 8,
1943 and professed her vows on June 13, 1946; she received a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics from Fontbonne College
in 1949 followed by an internship in Dietetics at St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota; she earned a master's degree
in Administration from Notre Dame University in 1981; and
WHEREAS, Sister Marianna served as a dietitian at HSHS
hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin early in her career; she
was the administrator of St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in
Effingham from 1962 to 1968 and served as administrator of St.
Mary's Hospital in Decatur from 1968 to 1969; she served the
Province as a provincial councilor and provincial superior
from 1969 to 1979; she founded Hospital Sisters Health System
in 1978 and served as executive vice president from 1979 to
1980 when she assumed the role of president until 1989; she was
also the convent librarian for many years and retired from

active ministry in 2016; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mariana was preceded in death by her
parents; her brother, James Kosior; and her two sisters,
Loraine Duray and Rose Marie Koopman; and
WHEREAS, Sister Marianna is survived by her brother,
Albert Kosior; her niece and nephew; and her Franciscan
Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 77 years;
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Sister Marianna Kosior O.S.F. and extend our sincere
condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
her; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Sister Marianna as an expression of
our deepest sympathy.
