1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Yoannah "Hattie" Eshet Nasik Asiel, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on October 25, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel was born Hattie Lonie to Mary and | ||||||
6 | Edgar Lonie in Pearl, Mississippi on November 3, 1939; at the | ||||||
7 | age of 10, she and her family moved to Chicago, which would | ||||||
8 | become her home for more than 70 years; she graduated from | ||||||
9 | Northern Illinois University, where she was a member of Alpha | ||||||
10 | Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; she married Prince Ben Asiel on | ||||||
11 | April 21, 1963 and, starting their family in 1967, they | ||||||
12 | welcomed Lisa (Alizah), Lori, (Ahavah), and Ben Asiel; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel worked at DuSable High School as a | ||||||
14 | physical education teacher, where she was adored by her | ||||||
15 | students because she always saw the good in everyone; she and | ||||||
16 | her husband opened Soul Vegetarian East, the first vegan | ||||||
17 | restaurant in Chicago; after moving to Israel, she established | ||||||
18 | the Kingdom School in Holiness for the children of Dimona in | ||||||
19 | 1972; and

20 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel became one of the first Crown | ||||||
21 | Sisters in the Hebrew Israelite community in 1978; and

1 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, | ||||||
2 | the Chicago Bulls, football games, college sports, and | ||||||
3 | historically Black colleges and universities games; even in | ||||||
4 | her later years, she played tennis and went swimming with her | ||||||
5 | grandsons; she loved to cook, especially gourmet food, and she | ||||||
6 | loved line dancing; she was a hard worker who always put others | ||||||
7 | before herself; she will be remembered as an elegant woman who | ||||||
8 | could light up a room and as the heartbeat of her family, a | ||||||
9 | pillar of strength and a motivator; and

10 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel was preceded in death by her | ||||||
11 | husband; her sister, Marjorie Reed; her sons, Yehudah and Ben; | ||||||
12 | and her sister-wife, Havanah; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Yoannah Asiel is survived by her sisters, | ||||||
14 | Shalamiyah, Shalgheyah, and Yeef-ah; her children, Tina, | ||||||
15 | Hosheanah, Michal, Asiel, Lisa (Lester), Ooriel, Lori (Mark), | ||||||
16 | Taeir (Trevor), Moreeyah, Arel (Parakiyah), Yahtmeed | ||||||
17 | (Tsfoonah), Ooval, Yosef (Shamiyah), and Elronayn; her nephew, | ||||||
18 | Mark Reed; her niece, Tracy Reed; and her 24 grandsons, 22 | ||||||
19 | granddaughters, and 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
21 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
22 | Yoannah "Hattie" Eshet Nasik Asiel and extend our sincere | ||||||
23 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
