SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Lorraine Wirges of Rantoul, who passed
4away on April 3, 2021; and
5 WHEREAS, Lorraine Wirges was born to Luther and Maggie
6(Thompson) Potteiger in Columbus, Nebraska on June 17, 1923;
7she graduated from Fullerton High School in May of 1940; she
8married Leonard Wirges at St. Peter's Catholic Church in
9Fullerton on November 6, 1947; and
10 WHEREAS, During the Korean War, Lorraine Wirges was
11employed by the U.S. Army; the family moved to Rantoul in
12October of 1959 where both she and her husband where employed
13and retired from the UASF at Chanute Air Force Base; and
14 WHEREAS, Lorraine Wirges was always active in the
15community; she was a member of the Rantoul Garden Club at local
16and state levels, a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and
17a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion
18Auxiliary; she and her husband were active in getting several
19Blue Star Markers at various locations, designed to honor
20those serving in the military, including Illinois' 100th
21marker at Maplewood Cemetery in Rantoul; they were also
22primary contributors to the local community's annual Arbor Day

1celebration, planting at least one new tree each year and
2getting Rantoul designated a Tree City USA each year by the
3Arbor Day Society; she was most dedicated to St. Malachy
4Catholic Church, where she served many years as the greeter at
5funerals and as lector; she also was on the Tree Committee,
6Rantoul; and
7 WHEREAS, In her younger years, Lorraine Wirges liked skeet
8shooting; she was an outdoor person, a beekeeper, a gardener,
9and an animal lover; she enjoyed horseback riding and playing
10bridge; she and her husband were natural dancers and enjoyed
11attending a Valentine's Day dance in the community each year;
12she will be remembered as an amazing woman; and
13 WHEREAS, Lorraine Wirges was preceded in death by her son,
14Paul; and
15 WHEREAS, Lorraine Wirges is survived by her husband; her
16daughter, Victoria Jeakins; her son, David (Orquidea); her
17five grandchildren; her ten great-grandchildren; and her two
18great-great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
19 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Lorraine Wirges and extend our sincere condolences to her
22family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
