1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Rev. Dr. John Q. Owens Jr.; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens served in the U.S. Army during World | ||||||
5 | War II; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens, a prolific preacher-teacher, became a | ||||||
7 | connectional officer in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) | ||||||
8 | Church and served as a pastor for 40 years; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens pastored at Bethel AME Church in | ||||||
10 | Madison for over 20 years, where he served faithfully with | ||||||
11 | perfect attendance alongside his wife, Dr. Dorothy Owens; he | ||||||
12 | retired under Bishop John R. Bryant (Ret.); and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens and his wife previously served at | ||||||
14 | three other churches for a combined 20 years before joining | ||||||
15 | Bethel AME Church; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens served as the social action | ||||||
17 | director/consultant for the AME Church, following the | ||||||
18 | transitioning of Dr. Leroy Nesbit in South Africa, and as a | ||||||
19 | member of the church's general board meeting for 16 years; and

1 | WHEREAS, Rev. Owens will be remembered for his leadership, | ||||||
2 | guidance, and teachings; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
5 | Rev. Dr. John Q. Owens Jr. and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
6 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
7 | it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to the family of Rev. Owens as an expression of our | ||||||
10 | deepest sympathy.
