2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Joseph Gregory "Greg" Gulick of Villa | ||||||
4 | Grove, who passed away on February 16, 2021; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was born in Danville to Karen | ||||||
6 | (Mitchell) and Joseph Lee Gulick on March 22, 1964; he | ||||||
7 | attended the University of Illinois before transferring to | ||||||
8 | Saint Louis University's Parks College to become an avionics | ||||||
9 | engineer; he married Patricia "Tish" Francis in Shelton, | ||||||
10 | Connecticut on July 28, 1989, and they had three sons; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, After graduating and earning his private pilot's | ||||||
12 | license, Greg Gulick got a job at Sikorsky Helicopter at their | ||||||
13 | office in Bridgeport, Connecticut; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Alongside his wife, Greg Gulick was called to the | ||||||
15 | ministry and joined The Way International; after completing | ||||||
16 | their ministry training, they worked in Michigan for several | ||||||
17 | years; during this time, he also taught himself computer | ||||||
18 | programming and accepted a position as a part-time software | ||||||
19 | engineer for the Sabre Corporation; after his third son was | ||||||
20 | born, his family moved to Villa Grove; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was offered the position of senior |

1 | project manager in the Decision Support Unit by the University | ||||||
2 | of Illinois (UI), and he began his UI career in October 2003; | ||||||
3 | he was promoted six times; he eventually served as the deputy | ||||||
4 | chief information officer (CIO) in Technology Services, and he | ||||||
5 | served as interim CIO starting in June 2019; he nurtured his | ||||||
6 | entire staff and connected with people across campus to build | ||||||
7 | strong relationships with those Tech Services supports; he led | ||||||
8 | several major efforts, including creating the innovation | ||||||
9 | group, implementing unified communications, expanding campus | ||||||
10 | networks, and launching the security initiative; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was at the helm of Tech Services in | ||||||
12 | March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the University of | ||||||
13 | Illinois to move all classes online during the seven-day | ||||||
14 | spring break; alongside his team, he worked around the clock | ||||||
15 | to meet the challenge; throughout the pandemic, he served on | ||||||
16 | the university-wide COVID-19 Steering Committee and led the | ||||||
17 | Tech Services team as they built the complex systems and | ||||||
18 | applications to support UI's novel saliva testing program and | ||||||
19 | the entire SHIELD ecosystem; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick continued to work at the University | ||||||
21 | of Illinois even after contracting COVID-19; he attended | ||||||
22 | meetings remotely and offered his staff and other colleagues | ||||||
23 | wisdom, moral support, or just a funny comment to make them | ||||||
24 | laugh; despite the tremendous responsibility and workload, he |

1 | approached his job with confidence, compassion, and a laser | ||||||
2 | focus on doing everything possible to help UI students, | ||||||
3 | faculty, staff, and the greater community stay safe during the | ||||||
4 | pandemic; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was deeply committed to his faith; he | ||||||
6 | enjoyed golfing, and he scored a hole-in-one on two separate | ||||||
7 | occasions; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was known for his thoughtful approach | ||||||
9 | to problem solving; he will be remembered as a leader who | ||||||
10 | changed the University of Illinois for the better, as a son and | ||||||
11 | brother who was the darling of his family, as a husband who | ||||||
12 | loved his wife with his whole heart, and as a father who loved | ||||||
13 | each of his sons completely and uniquely; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Greg Gulick was the husband of Patricia "Tish"; | ||||||
15 | the father of Joseph, James "Jake", and Matthew; the son of | ||||||
16 | Karen (Mitchell) and Joseph Lee Gulick; the stepson of Alfred | ||||||
17 | Hettinger; the brother of Denise Rieser (Gil) and Michelle | ||||||
18 | Osborne; and the friend to many; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Joseph Gregory "Greg" Gulick and extend our sincere | ||||||
22 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved |

| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the family of Greg Gulick as an expression of our | ||||||
