2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Edward Hegarty on October 20, 2018 at the | ||||||
4 | age of 89; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty was born and raised in Chicago; | ||||||
6 | during high school, he delivered gas bills and read gas meters; | ||||||
7 | he walked his route and, at one point, his territory was along | ||||||
8 | a nearly six-mile route on Wabansia Avenue from Western Avenue | ||||||
9 | all the way to Harlem Avenue; because of this, he could tell | ||||||
10 | you from memory where almost any address in the city was | ||||||
11 | located; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty always had music as part of his | ||||||
13 | life; he played accordion for many years and was a contestant | ||||||
14 | on a radio show in the mid-1940s; he received both his B.A. and | ||||||
15 | his M.A. in music education from the Chicago Musical College, a | ||||||
16 | part of Roosevelt University; he directed and sang in the | ||||||
17 | church choir at St. Angela Church in Chicago; he also sang with | ||||||
18 | the Tower Chorale, where he was known for being a "linchpin in | ||||||
19 | the chorus who was never without a smile"; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty married Mary Frances Mulhern in | ||||||
21 | 1953; they enjoyed traveling and took their 11 children on | ||||||
22 | yearly summer camping trips, visiting just about every state |

1 | and national park between Illinois and the West Coast; in | ||||||
2 | retirement, they took pleasure in their international travel; | ||||||
3 | and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty began a career in education in the | ||||||
5 | 1960s, teaching driver's education, various subjects in the | ||||||
6 | upper grades, and later becoming an assistant principal; in | ||||||
7 | 1964, he was appointed to his first principalship; he was | ||||||
8 | principal of three different schools, with Michael Faraday | ||||||
9 | School being his last and longest assignment at 22 years; he | ||||||
10 | retired in 1990, but he happily kept in touch with fellow | ||||||
11 | educators and gathered with them socially over the years; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty was noted for being "a connoisseur | ||||||
13 | of fine wine and classical music" who enjoyed and attended many | ||||||
14 | performances of the Lyric Opera of Chicago; during retirement, | ||||||
15 | he expanded his piano technique by taking private piano lessons | ||||||
16 | until the end of his life; he played in many recitals over the | ||||||
17 | years, with the most recent one being just a month before his | ||||||
18 | passing; and

19 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty volunteered for many years at the | ||||||
20 | Oak Park Arms to assist residents with their taxes; he also | ||||||
21 | kept his mind active by doing crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and by | ||||||
22 | memorizing long pieces of piano music; he also remained | ||||||
23 | physically active, taking deep-water aerobics classes at the |

1 | YMCA; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Edward and Mary Frances Hegarty recently | ||||||
3 | celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary; they were longtime | ||||||
4 | members of St. Giles Catholic Church and put their faith and | ||||||
5 | family at the center of their lives; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Edward Hegarty is survived by his beloved wife, | ||||||
7 | Mary Frances; his children, Maureen (Dan) Kruszynski, RoseAnn | ||||||
8 | (Jim) Vonesh, Kathleen (Robert) Burdett, Edward (Cindy), | ||||||
9 | Michael (Diane), Mary Pat (the late Joe) Williams, Daniel, | ||||||
10 | Patrick (Catherine), Mary Rose (Gerard) Crimmins, Terrence, | ||||||
11 | and Christopher (Amy Nelson); his grandchildren, Megan and Jim | ||||||
12 | (Kristina) Vonesh; Victoria, Diane (Brian) Bell, and Natalie | ||||||
13 | Burdett; Naomi and Aidan Hegarty; Logan and Tristan Williams; | ||||||
14 | Ryan and Shannon Hegarty; Erica and Stephanie Hegarty; and | ||||||
15 | Jared and Christopher Crimmins; he was also the | ||||||
16 | great-grandfather of Matthew, Caileigh, Grace, Sammy, and | ||||||
17 | Allison and Kaylan, Lia, Myles, and Neo; he was brother of | ||||||
18 | Patricia (Richard) Sharp and the late Ann (James) Malone and | ||||||
19 | Mary Rose Hegarty; as well as the uncle and great-uncle of | ||||||
20 | many; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
23 | Edward Hegarty, and extend our sincere condolences to his |

1 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
2 | further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of Edward Hegarty as an expression of | ||||||
