| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Ann Hughes-Johnson of Waukegan, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on January 5, 2015; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was born on July 23, 1925 in | ||||||
6 | Charleston, West Virginia; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson graduated from Seminole High | ||||||
8 | School in Sanford, Florida in 1943; she subsequently earned her | ||||||
9 | Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Stetson University | ||||||
10 | in 1949, her Master of Education degree (cum laude) from the | ||||||
11 | National College of Education at National Louis University in | ||||||
12 | 1964, and 62 hours towards her Ph.D. in math at Northwestern | ||||||
13 | University; she was elected to the honorary Gamma Sigma Epsilon | ||||||
14 | Chemistry Fraternity while at Stetson and to the Pi Lambda | ||||||
15 | Theta honorary education fraternity while at Northwestern; and

16 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson retired in 1985 from an | ||||||
17 | education career that spanned over 25 years; she taught at | ||||||
18 | Commonwealth School (now Novak-King) in North Chicago, Beach | ||||||
19 | Park Elementary School, and Waukegan High School; she also was | ||||||
20 | a chemist at Abbott Laboratories for a year before going into | ||||||
21 | teaching; and

1 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was an involved member of the | ||||||
2 | First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, where she was an elder, | ||||||
3 | deacon, singer in the Westminster Choir, and Sunday School | ||||||
4 | teacher; she was also very involved in the Trinity Evangelical | ||||||
5 | Lutheran Church of Waukegan, where she sang in the choir and | ||||||
6 | served on the Church Council and Women's Circle; she was also a | ||||||
7 | member of numerous civic organizations, including the Exchange | ||||||
8 | Club, the American Association of University Women, the | ||||||
9 | Waukegan Township Supervisor's office, the Philanthropic | ||||||
10 | Educational Organization, the Women's Club, the Girl Scouts of | ||||||
11 | America, the Waukegan Swedish Glee Club, the Waukegan Symphony | ||||||
12 | Chorus, and many other bridge, golf, and community | ||||||
13 | organizations; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was preceded in death by her | ||||||
15 | loving husband of 52 years, Judge John L. Hughes, and her | ||||||
16 | brother, Al Stine; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson is survived by her loving | ||||||
18 | husband of 18 years, Ralph Vincent Johnson; 4 children, Michael | ||||||
19 | (Connie) Hughes, David (Marilyn) Hughes, Steven (Mary) Hughes, | ||||||
20 | and Patricia Hughes; 3 step-children, Lynette (John) Carlson, | ||||||
21 | Doug (Kathleen) Johnson, and Cindy (Tim Kasper); 11 | ||||||
22 | grandchildren; 3 1/2 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, | ||||||
23 | Liz Stine; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her | ||||||
3 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Ann Hughes-Johnson; | ||||||
4 | and be it further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Ann Hughes-Johnson as an expression | ||||||
7 | of our sympathy.
