SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Leslie H. Kenyon of East Peoria, who
4passed away on January 14, 2011; and
5 WHEREAS, He was born October 13, 1922, in Peoria to Camilla
6Myers and Fred Kenyon; he married Theo Jean Ahrends on October
723, 1954, in Peoria; he was a graduate of Peoria High School
8and the University of Michigan, where he earned his degree in
9architecture; and
10 WHEREAS, During World War II he served in the United States
11Army, first in a camouflage unit, and following engineering
12training at State College, Pennsylvania, he was stationed in
13Hawaii; and
14 WHEREAS, As past president of the Central Illinois
15Landmarks Foundation, he worked to save Peoria's heritage,
16starting with the restoration of the Grand Army of the Republic
17Hall on Hamilton Boulevard; as president of Peoria City
18Beautiful in the 1960s, he led the petition drives to create
19the plaza for the new Peoria County Courthouse, instead of a
20parking lot, and also brought national speakers to talk on
21preservation; and

1 WHEREAS, As an architect, he restored the Peoria City Hall,
2but also designed buildings, including Peoria Players Theatre
3and the Constance Hall addition at Bradley University; in
4Eureka, he restored the original Eureka College Chapel attended
5by students in the 19th century; in addition to historic
6preservation, his firm also has designed schools in the region,
7churches, commercial businesses, and other structures; the
8firm will continue under the Kenyon name; and
9 WHEREAS, Leslie Kenyon is survived by his wife, Theo;
10therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13his family and friends, the passing of Leslie Kenyon; and be it
14further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Leslie Kenyon as a symbol of our
17sincere sympathy.
