2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Joan | ||||||
4 | Patricia Murphy, who passed away on September 18, 2016 at the | ||||||
5 | age of 79; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy had a long and distinguished career in | ||||||
7 | Crestwood government; after working as a flight attendant for | ||||||
8 | United Airlines, she was elected to serve as Crestwood Village | ||||||
9 | Clerk in 1965; in 1977, she was elected to serve as Worth | ||||||
10 | Township Clerk, serving for two terms; in 1989, she was elected | ||||||
11 | to serve as Worth Township Supervisor, a position she held for | ||||||
12 | the next eight years; in 2002, she was elected to serve as the | ||||||
13 | 6th District Commissioner on the Cook County Board of | ||||||
14 | Commissioners, where she chaired the labor committee; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy was the first woman to be elected to | ||||||
16 | public office in Crestwood and the first woman to be elected as | ||||||
17 | Worth Township Clerk and Worth Township Supervisor; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy was a longtime delegate to the | ||||||
19 | Democratic National Convention; she was a part of history when | ||||||
20 | she cast her superdelegate vote for Hillary Clinton in July of | ||||||
21 | 2016 at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia; and

1 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy was a diligent advocate for the Sixth | ||||||
2 | District and the Southland region as a whole, fighting for the | ||||||
3 | equitable distribution of resources and services; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy was a gifted singer who loved parties | ||||||
5 | and taking her children on adventures; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy is preceded in death by her husband, | ||||||
7 | Donald Francis Murphy, Sr., whom she married in 1959; her son, | ||||||
8 | Donald Francis Murphy, Jr.; her father, Michael O'Malley, Sr.; | ||||||
9 | and her sister, Eileen Tomao; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Joan Murphy is survived by her daughter, Tricia | ||||||
11 | Murphy; her sons, Tim (Courtney) and Tony (Stephanie Milito); | ||||||
12 | her grandchildren, Madelyn, Mia, Teagan, Ronan, and Mary; her | ||||||
13 | mother, Concetta; her brothers, Michael O'Malley, Jr. and Bobby | ||||||
14 | O'Malley; and her nieces and nephews, Joyce (Michael) | ||||||
15 | Vaudreuil, Theresa (Tom) Kaliszewski, Dan (Rhonda) Claus, Mark | ||||||
16 | O'Malley, and Kerry O'Malley; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
19 | we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Joan Patricia Murphy; and be it further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
