HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Bassam
4Hanna Naoum; and
5 WHEREAS, Bassam Naoum was born in Amman, Jordan, on
6February 22, 1951; his parents were Hanna Naoum and Zakieh
7Ibrahim; he married Phoebe Naoum (nee Tudor) in 1978 in
8Huntsville, Alabama; and
9 WHEREAS, Bassam Naoum came to America in 1970 in search of
10an education and a new life; after arriving in Chicago, he
11subsequently attended Snead State Junior College in Alabama;
12during this time, he alternated between working in Chicago and
13taking classes in Alabama each semester; and
14 WHEREAS, Two months after their marriage, Bassam Naoum and
15his wife moved to Chicago, where he graduated from DePaul
16University; for the next 10 years, he worked within the hotel
17industry and spent his free time traveling, enjoying
18restaurants, and socializing with his friends; in 1988, Bassam
19and Phoebe's first child, Noelle, was born, followed by their
20second child, Farris, in 1990; and
21 WHEREAS, In order to pursue his dream of owning a business,

1Bassam Naoum opened his first store in Cabrini Green in 1993
2called "Ollie's", a name which stuck and became his nickname;
3he quickly became a part of the Cabrini community and
4participated in various events, such as the "Back to School
5Picnic" and the community Thanksgiving Dinner; and
6 WHEREAS, Bassam Naoum was well known in his neighborhood
7for helping those in need of help in any way possible,
8emotionally or financially; he will be remembered fondly by his
9family as a loving father and husband who would do anything for
10his family and friends and as a gregarious man with a wonderful
11sense of humor; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Bassam
15Hanna Naoum; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Bassam Naoum as an expression of our
18sympathy.
