2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Iberia | ||||||
4 | Beatrice Hampton, who passed away on October 16, 2016 at the | ||||||
5 | age of 94; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Iberia Hampton was born on February 5, 1922 in | ||||||
7 | Haynesville, Louisiana; her parents were Elihue and Lizzie | ||||||
8 | White; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In the 1930s, Iberia Hampton and her husband moved | ||||||
10 | to the Chicago area to find better job opportunities; she | ||||||
11 | stayed home to care for their children while her husband worked | ||||||
12 | at the Corn Products Refining Company in Argo; in 1958, they | ||||||
13 | moved to Maywood; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Iberia Hampton began working at Corn Products in | ||||||
15 | 1956 in a quality control position; while there, she served as | ||||||
16 | a union steward, which helped to inspire her children to make | ||||||
17 | the world a better place; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Iberia Hampton's kitchen on the 800 block of South | ||||||
19 | 17th Avenue in Maywood was often the scene of philosophical and | ||||||
20 | strategic political conversations, especially after the | ||||||
21 | assassination of her son Fred on December 4, 1969; she would |

1 | serve many meals to the activists, entertainers, politicians, | ||||||
2 | and everyday people who visited her home; she and her family | ||||||
3 | also produced a list of "progressive people running for office" | ||||||
4 | in the community, so that area voters could "select who they | ||||||
5 | thought were best fit for office"; and

6 | WHEREAS, Iberia Hampton will be dearly missed by all who | ||||||
7 | knew and loved her; therefore, be it
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
9 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
10 | we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of | ||||||
11 | Iberia Beatrice Hampton; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to the family of Iberia Hampton as an expression of | ||||||
14 | our sympathy.
