2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate
Jose Abreu on being | ||||||
4 | named the 2014 Major League Baseball American League Rookie of | ||||||
5 | the Year; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jose Dariel Abreu Correa was born on January 29, | ||||||
7 | 1987 in Cruces, Cienfuegos Province, Cuba; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Jose Abreu was a star of Cuban baseball; he played | ||||||
9 | in the Cuban National Series
and on Cuba's national baseball | ||||||
10 | team; after defecting from Cuba to the Dominican Republic in
| ||||||
11 | August of 2013, he was granted free agency by Major League | ||||||
12 | Baseball (MLB); he signed with the Chicago
White Sox in October | ||||||
13 | 2013; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Jose Abreu made his MLB debut for the White Sox on | ||||||
15 | March 31, 2014; he recorded his first major-league hit on that | ||||||
16 | day and his first home run 8 days later; and

17 | WHEREAS, During the first half of the 2014 MLB season, Jose | ||||||
18 | Abreu was repeatedly named American League (AL) Player
of the | ||||||
19 | Week and AL Player of the Month as his statistics continued to | ||||||

1 | WHEREAS, As excitement and appreciation grew for Jose | ||||||
2 | Abreu's talents as a hitter, he was selected to join the | ||||||
3 | American League All-Star Team in the 2014 MLB All-Star Game, | ||||||

Minneapolis; and

5 | WHEREAS, By the end of the 2014 MLB season, Jose Abreu was | ||||||
6 | credited with 176 hits, 107 runs
batted in, and 80 runs; his | ||||||
7 | on-base percentage was .383, and his 36 homers notched a new | ||||||
8 | record for
White Sox sluggers in their rookie year; and

9 | WHEREAS, Jose Abreu was awarded the Silver Slugger Award | ||||||
10 | for being the best offensive player
at first base in the | ||||||
11 | American League during the 2014 MLB season; and

12 | WHEREAS, On November 10, 2014, Jose Abreu was named by the | ||||||
13 | Baseball Writers Association
of America as recipient of the | ||||||
14 | American League Rookie of the Year Award in a unanimous vote; | ||||||

19 | WHEREAS, The Rookie of the Year Award for the American | ||||||

presented annually in honor | ||||||
21 | of the inaugural 1947 winner, Jackie Robinson, signaling this |

3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
4 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
5 | we congratulate Jose Dariel Abreu Correa on being named the | ||||||
6 | 2014 Major League Baseball American League Rookie of the Year, | ||||||
7 | and we wish him many more years of success; and be it further
| ||||||
8 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
9 | presented to Jose Abreu and to the Chicago
