1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan was born and raised in Gobbler's Knob, | ||||||
3 | 15 miles south of McLeansboro; he is the youngest of 10 | ||||||
4 | children and was raised by his mother after his father died | ||||||
5 | when he was 4 years old; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan graduated as an all-State player from | ||||||
7 | McLeansboro High School in 1960; he went on to play basketball | ||||||
8 | at the University of Evansville; he led Evansville to the NCAA | ||||||
9 | College Division Championship twice, including a perfect 10 | ||||||
10 | 29-0 season in 1965; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan was first selected by the Baltimore | ||||||
12 | Bullets in 1964 during the third round of the NBA Draft, but | ||||||
13 | opted to remain in college; he was subsequently selected by the | ||||||
14 | Baltimore Bullets again during the 1965 NBA Draft with the 4th | ||||||
15 | pick; he played for the Bullets for one season and then went on | ||||||
16 | to play for the Chicago Bulls during the team's early years; | ||||||
17 | and

18 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan led the Bulls to several playoffs and | ||||||
19 | helped them to win one division title; he averaged 9.1 rebounds | ||||||
20 | per game in his second season, and his career rebounding | ||||||
21 | average of 7.4 rebounds per game was seen as unusually high for | ||||||
22 | a guard; he is currently 4th on the Bulls' all-time scoring |

2 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan's playing career was cut short by a | ||||||
3 | string of knee injuries and switched from playing to coaching; | ||||||
4 | in 1979, he became the Bulls' head coach; in December of 1988, | ||||||
5 | the Utah Jazz chose him as the team's as the new head coach; he | ||||||
6 | went on to enjoy a highly successful run of 16 consecutive | ||||||
7 | seasons of taking the team to the playoffs; he led the Jazz to | ||||||
8 | 6 division championships and 10 seasons with greater than 50 | ||||||
9 | wins; he also led the Jazz to the NBA Finals twice; and

10 | WHEREAS, Jerry Sloan has had a life-long record of | ||||||
11 | achievement in the sport of basketball and an exemplary record | ||||||
12 | as an NBA coach, becoming only the 5th NBA coach in history to | ||||||
13 | attain 1000 victories and the only NBA coach in history to | ||||||
14 | receive 1,000 wins with the same team, the Utah Jazz; in April | ||||||
15 | of 2009, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball | ||||||
16 | Hall of Fame; and

17 | WHEREAS, In recognition of Jerry Sloan's lifelong record of | ||||||
18 | hard work, dedication, and exemplary achievement in the sport | ||||||
19 | of basketball, Hamilton County High School will rename its | ||||||
20 | gymnasium as the Sloan Gymnasium on December 15, 2012; | ||||||
21 | therefore, be it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

2 | we honor Jerry Sloan on this very special occasion of | ||||||
3 | recognizing his life-long pursuit of excellence in the sport of | ||||||
4 | basketball and outstanding record of achievement in that great | ||||||
5 | pastime; and be it further

6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | delivered to Jerry Sloan as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
