2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of | ||||||
4 | John P. Shonkwiler of Monticello, who passed away on July 18, | ||||||
5 | 2012; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was born in Decatur on April 5, | ||||||
7 | 1933, to Robert P. and Mary Dickey Shonkwiler; he graduated | ||||||
8 | from Monticello High School in June 1951, the University of | ||||||
9 | Illinois in 1955, and Northwestern University School of | ||||||
10 | Law-Chicago in June 1962, with a juris doctor; he served in the | ||||||
11 | U.S. Navy for 23 years in both active and reserve duty; he | ||||||
12 | retired as a captain in Naval intelligence in 1978; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler worked in his father's law office | ||||||
14 | until 1965, when he was appointed magistrate of the Sixth | ||||||
15 | Judicial Circuit; he was appointed an associate judge from 1971 | ||||||
16 | to 1972, a circuit judge by the Supreme Court in 1974, and was | ||||||
17 | elected to that office in 1974 by the people of Piatt County; | ||||||
18 | he was a judge for 47 years and chief judge of the Sixth | ||||||
19 | Judicial Circuit for 18 1/2 years; and

20 | WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was a delegate to the National | ||||||
21 | Conference of Special Court Judges, chairman for the Judicial | ||||||
22 | Conference Committee on Contempt, member of the Illinois State |

1 | Bar Association Assembly, member of the board of directors for | ||||||
2 | the Illinois Judges Association, president of the Illinois | ||||||
3 | Judges Association, member of the executive committee for the | ||||||
4 | Illinois Judicial Conference, and was a member of the Supreme | ||||||
5 | Court Committee on Judicial Mentoring; he received a | ||||||
6 | commendation from the president of the Illinois Senate for his | ||||||
7 | contribution to child support enforcement; and

8 | WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler was preceded in death by his | ||||||
9 | parents, Robert and Mary Shonkwiler and his sister, Suzanne | ||||||
10 | Shonkwiler Olds; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, John Shonkwiler is survived by his sister, Mary | ||||||
12 | Alice (Robert) Strodel; his five nieces and one nephew; | ||||||
13 | therefore, be it

14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
15 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we mourn the passing of John Shonkwiler, and we extend our | ||||||
17 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
18 | and loved him; and be it further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to his family as an expression of our deepest | ||||||
21 | sympathy.
