HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to recognize the 155th anniversary of the
founding of the Original Providence Baptist Church in Chicago;
and
WHEREAS, The church began in 1863 with the hopes and dreams
of a few fugitives slaves that had made their way to Chicago by
way of the Underground Railroad; and
WHEREAS, Within a few years, church membership had grown to
nearly 300 and money was raised to build their first church
building; and
WHEREAS, The church moved to various locations over the
years, and in 1972, settled in its present location on North
Pine Avenue; and
WHEREAS, The church stands as a monument to the cause of
Christians in the immediate community and in the City of
Chicago; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
recognize the 155th anniversary of the founding of the Original

Providence Baptist Church, and wish them many more wonderful
years; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the Original Providence Baptist Church as a symbol
of our respect and esteem.
