2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are proud to recognize the accomplishments of | ||||||
4 | citizens of the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, At the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, | ||||||
6 | Canada, Shani Davis won the gold medal in the men's 1,000-meter | ||||||
7 | speed skating event, becoming the first speed skater to become | ||||||
8 | a repeat Olympic 1,000-meter champion; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Shani Davis is the first African-American man to | ||||||
10 | win a gold medal in Winter Olympic history; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Shani Davis was born on August 13, 1982, in | ||||||
12 | Chicago to Cherie Davis; he began his remarkable career at the | ||||||
13 | age of 2, when his mother took him roller skating at a | ||||||
14 | neighborhood rink; and

15 | WHEREAS, At the age of 6, Shani Davis and his mother made | ||||||
16 | the long trek north from their home on the south side of | ||||||
17 | Chicago to the Robert Crown Community Center in Evanston and | ||||||
18 | the Evanston Speedskating Club to sharpen his skating skills; | ||||||
19 | at the age of 10, Shani and his mother moved to the Rogers Park | ||||||
20 | neighborhood of Chicago so that he could be closer to the rink; | ||||||

1 | WHEREAS, Shani Davis' success is a testament to community | ||||||
2 | support and the unwavering motivation and sacrifice of his | ||||||
3 | mother, Cherie Davis; and

4 | WHEREAS, Shani Davis set the world record in the men's | ||||||
5 | 1,500-meter speed skating event on December 11, 2009 at the | ||||||
6 | Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating competition in Salt Lake | ||||||
7 | City, Utah; and

8 | WHEREAS, Shani Davis has a distinguished speed skating | ||||||
9 | record; he is a 2-time gold medal Olympic champion in the | ||||||
10 | 1,000-meter speed skating event; he is a 2-time silver medal | ||||||
11 | Olympic champion in the 1,500-meter speed skating event; he has | ||||||
12 | set the world record in the 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter speed | ||||||
13 | skating events on 4 separate occasions; he has also won the | ||||||
14 | Overall World Cup Title in the 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter | ||||||
15 | events for 3 consecutive years in a row; therefore, be it

16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
17 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
18 | congratulate Shani Davis for his gold medal victory at the 2010 | ||||||
19 | Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada and honor him for | ||||||
20 | achieving the greatest athletic achievement while shattering | ||||||
21 | records and crossing racial divides; and be it further
