HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Pastor Lavell
4 (L.V.) Jenkins, of the Greater Christian Unity Missionary
5 Baptist Church in Robbins, on his years of service and his
6 retirement; and
7 WHEREAS, He was born the tenth child of thirteen to Pastor
8 Sam and Mrs. Estelle Jenkins; together with three brothers, two
9 nephews, and a good friend, Lavell formed the group "The
10 Spiritual Travelers"; at the choir's anniversary of the
11 Universal Baptist Church on Chicago's Westside, Lavell met his
12 wife of now over 50 years, Mary A. Jenkins; and
13 WHEREAS, On April 3, 1960, he was ordained as a deacon at
14 the Obedient Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of
15 Pastor James G. Lewis; on February 27, 1972 Deacon Jenkins
16 became Reverend Lavell Jenkins, under Pastor James Lark; and
17 WHEREAS, Reverend Jenkins was called to the Greater
18 Christian Unity Missionary Baptist Church, as Pastor, on April
19 14, 1974; during his tenure, the church has been able to pay
20 off its first mortgage, renovate the restrooms to accommodate
21 the handicap, and purchase pews and additional land; and

1 WHEREAS, In the spring of 2006, the church paid tribute to
2 Pastor Jenkins by naming the dining hall the "Reverend L. V.
3 Jenkins Fellowship Hall" in recognition of his hard work and
4 dedication to the ministry; and
5 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Pastor Lavell Jenkins has
6 not only served Greater Christian Unity but also the community
7 of Robbins; with the ministry at heart, he studied at the
8 Chicago Baptist Institute to further increase his knowledge of
9 the Word; and
10 WHEREAS, He has been a part of the South Suburban Ministers
11 Alliance, Robbins Ministers Conference, and the Westside
12 Ministers Conference of Chicago; in the 1960s, Pastor Jenkins
13 marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil
14 rights leaders from Chicago's Grant Park to Chicago City Hall;
15 therefore, be it
16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18 congratulate Pastor Jenkins on his retirement and honor him for
19 his years of service to the people of the Greater Christian
20 Unity Missionary Baptist Church and the community of Robbins;
21 and be it further
22 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
