| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 66 | ||||||
| 3 | seconds; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in | ||||||
| 5 | America, with costs soaring past a quarter trillion dollars; | ||||||
| 6 | and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise with 5.4 | ||||||
| 8 | million Americans currently living with the disease and an | ||||||
| 9 | estimated 16 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with | ||||||
| 10 | the disease by 2050; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Currently, 220,000 people in Illinois live with | ||||||
| 12 | the disease; there will be 260,000 in just seven years; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of | ||||||
| 14 | death and an unrelenting, progressive condition that destroys | ||||||
| 15 | brain cells; currently, no cure or even a way to slow the | ||||||
| 16 | progression of the disease exists; Alzheimer's places | ||||||
| 17 | significant financial burdens on families and businesses, with | ||||||
| 18 | businesses losing billions a year in lost productivity and | ||||||
| 19 | replacement expenses for employees who miss work or quit to | ||||||
| 20 | care for a relative; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2016, there were 588,000 Illinois | ||||||
| 2 | family members and friends who provided over 670 million hours | ||||||
| 3 | of unpaid care, valued at $8.47 billion, to their loved ones | ||||||
| 4 | with Alzheimer's and other dementias; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on | ||||||
| 6 | Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a | ||||||
| 7 | whole is of great importance; the need for home and | ||||||
| 8 | community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the | ||||||
| 9 | rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health | ||||||
| 11 | crisis and we call upon all policymakers to join in the efforts | ||||||
| 12 | to raise awareness and to serve the hundreds of thousands of | ||||||
| 13 | persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias in Illinois, their | ||||||
| 14 | families, and caregivers; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, On April 11, 2018, Alzheimer's advocates will | ||||||
| 16 | speak up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's | ||||||
| 17 | and their families and ask the Illinois General Assembly to | ||||||
| 18 | make Alzheimer's disease a priority public health issue in the | ||||||
| 19 | State of Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 21 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 22 | declare April 11, 2018 as the "Annual Alzheimer's Association | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Advocacy Day" in the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
| 2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 3 | presented to the Alzheimer's Association.
