HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to congratulate former Illinois State
University (ISU) football legend and NFL standout James Harvey
"Boomer" Grigsby on the occasion of being selected for
induction into the College Football Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, A three-time First Team All-American in 2002,
2003, and 2004, Boomer Grigsby remains the Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS) leader in career tackles with
550, career solo tackles with 325, single-season tackles per
game with 16.27 in 2002, and single-season solo tackles per
game with 9.82 in 2002; and
WHEREAS, As a standout linebacker, Boomer Grigsby is the
only player in history to finish in the top three for the Buck
Buchanan Award in three consecutive seasons; he ranks second
all-time in FCS history with 12.5 tackles per game during his
career and boasts two of the top three single-season solo
tackle performances in FCS history with 108 in 2002 and 109 in
2003; and
WHEREAS, Boomer Grigsby won the College Sporting News FCS
Defensive Player of the Year award twice, and the award has
since been renamed in his honor; and

WHEREAS, The only three-time Missouri Valley Football
Conference (MVFC) Defensive Player of the Year in league
history, Boomer Grigsby was a three-time First Team All-MVFC
selection and remains the all-time leading tackler in
conference and school history, being credited by both the MVFC
and ISU with 580 career tackles; and
WHEREAS, Boomer Grigsby was an honorable mention
all-conference selection when he was named to the MVFC
All-Newcomer Team in 2001; he led the FCS in tackles in 2002,
led the conference in tackles three times, and led ISU in
tackles all four seasons; a three-time team captain, he was
also twice named the ISU Milt Weisbecker Male Athlete of the
Year and was inducted into the ISU Athletics Percy Family Hall
of Fame in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Boomer Grigsby was a fifth-round pick in the 2005
NFL Draft; he played in the league for the Kansas City Chiefs
from 2005 to 2007, the Miami Dolphins in 2008, and the Houston
Texans in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Off the field, Boomer Grigsby established the
Boomer Grigsby Foundation, and he has volunteered with Jared
Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors and the Special Olympics;
and

WHEREAS, Boomer Grigsby continued his relationship with
ISU football as the color analyst for Redbird football
broadcasts on NBC Sports Chicago for three seasons; he also
served as a television analyst for the Illinois High School
Association's football playoff broadcasts for two years; and
WHEREAS, Boomer Grigsby and the rest of the 2022 class are
among only 1,056 players and 226 coaches to have been inducted
into the College Football Hall of Fame from the nearly 5.62
million individuals who have played or coached; therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we congratulate James Harvey "Boomer" Grigsby on being
inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and for his
accomplishments both on and off the field, and we wish him the
best in his future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to Boomer Grigsby as an expression of our esteem and
respect.
