2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Charles Matthews on the | ||||||
4 | occasion of his retirement as president and chief executive | ||||||
5 | officer of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Charles Matthews earned his Bachelor of Arts in | ||||||
7 | Economics from Talladega College in Alabama and his master's | ||||||
8 | degree in Finance from Clark Atlanta University School of | ||||||
9 | Business in Georgia; he also completed the University of | ||||||
10 | Pennsylvania Wharton Business School's executive program in | ||||||
11 | utility finance; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Before taking the helm at Peoples Gas and North | ||||||
13 | Shore Gas, Charles Matthews spent nine years in executive and | ||||||
14 | leadership positions at We Energies, where he served as senior | ||||||
15 | vice president of wholesale energy and fuels and customer | ||||||
16 | solutions; before joining We Energies, he served as president | ||||||
17 | and chief executive officer of Jamaica Public Service Company | ||||||
18 | Limited, a subsidiary of the Mirant Corporation, where he | ||||||
19 | helped structure and then led the company's transition from | ||||||
20 | government-owned to private ownership; and

21 | WHEREAS, Charles Matthews has spent the last seven years | ||||||
22 | as the president and chief executive officer of Peoples Gas |

1 | and North Shore Gas, where he managed the daily operations, | ||||||
2 | strategy, and administrative activities of WEC Energy Group's | ||||||
3 | two Illinois utilities that collectively provide safe, | ||||||
4 | reliable natural gas service to nearly one million customers | ||||||
5 | in the City of Chicago and 54 communities in its northern | ||||||
6 | suburbs; his guidance and leadership have been noted as key to | ||||||
7 | the company's success in moving forward while significantly | ||||||
8 | improving customer service; and

9 | WHEREAS, Charles Matthews is a member of several boards of | ||||||
10 | directors, including the American Gas Association, the Chicago | ||||||
11 | Urban League, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Illinois | ||||||
12 | Utility Business Diversity Council, Navy Pier, Rush University | ||||||
13 | Medical Center, Start Early, the United Way of Metro Chicago, | ||||||
14 | and World Business Chicago; he also is active with Chicago | ||||||
15 | United and the Commercial Club of Chicago, including its Civic | ||||||
16 | Committee; and

17 | WHEREAS, Charles Matthews will retire after more than 40 | ||||||
18 | years in the energy industry at the end of June 2022; | ||||||
19 | therefore, be it

20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
21 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
22 | we congratulate Charles Matthews on the occasion of his | ||||||
23 | retirement and wish him the best in his future endeavors; and |
