| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was noted for his work with | ||||||
3 | labor, but it was his leadership role in the civil rights arena | ||||||
4 | that has always been understated; he was the lead architect for | ||||||
5 | the 1963 March on Washington, an event Dr. Martin Luther King | ||||||
6 | Jr. is most credited for; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph, with the help of Bayard | ||||||
8 | Rustin and many others, set the tone and direction for the 1941 | ||||||
9 | March on Washington, which was designed to desegregate the | ||||||
10 | nation's munitions plants; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, President Franklin D. Roosevelt desegregated | ||||||
12 | these plants during World War II through Executive Order 8802, | ||||||
13 | the Fair Employment Act; the Act set the tone for | ||||||
14 | African-Americans in the labor movement in America; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was the first | ||||||
16 | African-American to have a seat on the board of the AFL-CIO; | ||||||
17 | and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph and a few others established | ||||||
19 | the first recognized labor union of African-Americans, known as | ||||||
20 | the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids; and

1 | WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in | ||||||
2 | Chicago has asked all of the residents of Illinois to honor | ||||||
3 | this great labor leader on the occasion of his 123rd birthday | ||||||
4 | by proclaiming April 15, 2012 as A. Philip Randolph Day in | ||||||
5 | Illinois; therefore, be it

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
7 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
8 | we designate the date of April 15, 2012 as A. Philip Randolph | ||||||
9 | Day in the State of Illinois and urge the people of this State | ||||||
10 | to join in the celebration of his birth at the A. Philip | ||||||
11 | Randolph Museum in Chicago; and be it further
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
13 | presented to Dr. Lyn Hughes, founder of the A. Philip Randolph | ||||||
14 | Museum in Chicago, for display in the museum.
