HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was noted for his work with
3labor, but it was his leadership role in the civil rights arena
4that has always been understated; he was the lead architect for
5the 1963 March on Washington, an event Dr. Martin Luther King
6Jr. is most credited for; and
7 WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph, with the help of Bayard
8Rustin and many others, set the tone and direction for the 1941
9March on Washington, which was designed to desegregate the
10nation's munitions plants; and
11 WHEREAS, President Franklin D. Roosevelt desegregated
12these plants during World War II through Executive Order 8802,
13the Fair Employment Act; the Act set the tone for
14African-Americans in the labor movement in America; and
15 WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph was the first
16African-American to have a seat on the board of the AFL-CIO;
17and
18 WHEREAS, Asa Philip Randolph and a few others established
19the first recognized labor union of African-Americans, known as
20the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids; and

1 WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in
2Chicago has asked all of the residents of Illinois to honor
3this great labor leader on the occasion of his 123rd birthday
4by proclaiming April 15, 2012 as A. Philip Randolph Day in
5Illinois; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we designate the date of April 15, 2012 as A. Philip Randolph
9Day in the State of Illinois and urge the people of this State
10to join in the celebration of his birth at the A. Philip
11Randolph Museum in Chicago; and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Dr. Lyn Hughes, founder of the A. Philip Randolph
14Museum in Chicago, for display in the museum.
