HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are committed to the youth of our State and
4dedicated to teaching fundamental life lessons to the State's
5future generations; and
6 WHEREAS, A lack of financial knowledge can lead to
7devastating money problems, including unmanageable debt or
8even home foreclosure; and
9 WHEREAS, The month of April is recognized nationally as
10Financial Literacy Month; and
11 WHEREAS, In 2008, the President's Advisory Council defined
12financial literacy as "the ability to use knowledge and skills
13to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of
14financial wellbeing"; and
15 WHEREAS, Teach Children to Save Day was established by the
16American Bankers Association in 1997 and has reached more than
175.6 million young people through the commitment of more than
18121,000 banker volunteers; and
19 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
20Representatives support teaching our children money management

1skills and encouraging them to save money for the future; we
2also support education and money management as skills as a key
3to a better life for our children; and
4 WHEREAS, Teaching children the value of savings and the
5prudent use of credit will enable them to be financially
6capable adults who can properly manage and invest money, which
7will also benefit our State and national economy; therefore, be
8it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we designate the date of April 11, 2014 as Teach Children to
12Save Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That we encourage all banks and schools
14throughout the State to take part in this program.
