2 | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are | ||||||
3 | honored to recognize significant milestones in
the lives of the | ||||||
4 | people of this State; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that former State | ||||||
6 | Representative Paul Stone of
Sullivan is celebrating his 100th | ||||||
7 | birthday; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Rep. Stone was born in Newton on September 21, | ||||||
9 | 1915 to Claude and Ruth
Stone; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Rep. Stone attended one-room country schools | ||||||
11 | until entering Sullivan Township High
School, graduating in | ||||||
12 | 1933; following graduation, he worked 2 years in Sullivan at | ||||||
13 | the Brown
Shoe company for 12 cents an hour, 10 hours a day, 6 | ||||||
14 | days a week; in 1940, he received a
Bachelor of Science in | ||||||
15 | General Business, making him the first in his family to earn a | ||||||
16 | college degree;
on June 1, 1942, he received his L.L.B./J.D. | ||||||
17 | law degree from the University of Illinois; he was
honored by | ||||||
18 | the University of Illinois Law School as its February 1973 | ||||||
19 | Alumni of the Month; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Rep. Stone married Thelma Jones in Benton on | ||||||
21 | February 5, 1939; he was
admitted to the practice of law on |

1 | September 14, 1942; he was recognized in 1992 by the Illinois | ||||||
2 | Bar
Association as a Senior Counsel and by the Moultrie County | ||||||
3 | Bar Association for his 50 years of service
as an attorney; he | ||||||
4 | practiced law in Sullivan for 55 years until his retirement as | ||||||
5 | senior partner of Stone
and Stone in 1997; he has been | ||||||
6 | recognized by numerous foundations and organizations and is a
| ||||||
7 | member of multiple professional and service organizations; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Rep. Stone was elected as a State Representative | ||||||
9 | in 1950 to the 67th General Assembly
from the 24th District; he | ||||||
10 | was elected again in 1966 as State Representative to the 75th | ||||||
11 | General
Assembly for the 48th District and served through the | ||||||
12 | 79th General Assembly, in which he was elected
Chairman of the | ||||||
13 | Democratic Conference; he also served on the Board of Governors | ||||||
14 | of State Colleges
and Universities of Illinois for Eastern | ||||||
15 | Illinois University, Illinois State University, Western | ||||||
16 | Illinois
University, and Northern Illinois University; he was a | ||||||
17 | member of the Illinois Board of Higher
Education, the | ||||||
18 | Universities Civil Service Merit System, the Board of the | ||||||
19 | Western Illinois University
Foundation, and the Board of the | ||||||
20 | Illinois State University Foundation; in 1994, he was selected | ||||||
21 | as a member
of the Centennial 100 as one of 100 individuals who | ||||||
22 | made a significant contribution to Eastern Illinois
| ||||||
23 | University's first 100 years; he was elected to the University | ||||||
24 | of Illinois Board of Trustees in 1978
and served 2 terms as | ||||||
25 | President of the Board; and

1 | WHEREAS, Rep. Stone is the proud father of 4 children, | ||||||
2 | Elaine Heavy, Paul Lee Stone,
Michael L. Stone, and Marsha | ||||||
3 | Daniel; he and his wife have 10 grandchildren, 13 | ||||||
4 | great-grandchildren,
and one great-great-grandchild; | ||||||
5 | therefore, be it

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
7 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
8 | congratulate former State
Representative Paul Stone on the | ||||||
9 | occasion of his 100th birthday, and we extend to him our | ||||||
10 | sincere
best wishes for the future; and be it further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to Rep. Stone as an expression of
our respect and | ||||||
13 | esteem.
