| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Interstate 64 is a major thoroughfare that runs | ||||||
| 3 | through the communities of East St. Louis, O'Fallon, Fairview | ||||||
| 4 | Heights, and Washington Park in southwestern Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Wyvetter Younge was one of the longest-serving | ||||||
| 6 | members of the Illinois House of Representatives; she was born | ||||||
| 7 | and raised in East St. Louis; she took office in 1975, worked | ||||||
| 8 | tirelessly on behalf of her constituents, and believed strongly | ||||||
| 9 | in her community; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS,
She was a staunch believer in education and | ||||||
| 11 | economic development, fighting hard to keep the State community | ||||||
| 12 | college in East St. Louis; she fought to make certain that the | ||||||
| 13 | Casino Queen would be in East St. Louis; and she fought for any | ||||||
| 14 | cause that would help her district; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, She represented House District 114, which | ||||||
| 16 | includes some of the poorest communities in the Metro-East and | ||||||
| 17 | some of the wealthiest; the district covers Alorton, Brooklyn, | ||||||
| 18 | Centreville, East St. Louis, Scott Air Force Base, Shiloh, | ||||||
| 19 | Washington Park, and parts of Belleville, Cahokia, Fairview | ||||||
| 20 | Heights, Mascoutah, Millstadt, Swansea, Venice, and O'Fallon | ||||||
| 21 | south of State Street; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, In respect for former Representative Younge, and | ||||||
| 2 | her dedication and hard work for the people of her district, we | ||||||
| 3 | believe she deserves to be honored in a prominent way in her | ||||||
| 4 | district; and the naming of this stretch of highway is fitting, | ||||||
| 5 | because Representative Younge was known as a dedicated servant | ||||||
| 6 | who almost always returned home to her district and family | ||||||
| 7 | instead of staying overnight in Springfield, and used this | ||||||
| 8 | route extensively in the service of area residents; therefore, | ||||||
| 9 | be it

| 10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 11 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 12 | the portion of Interstate 64 from Summit Avenue to Illinois | ||||||
| 13 | Highway 111 be designated the Wyvetter Younge Memorial Parkway; | ||||||
| 14 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | ||||||
| 16 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | ||||||
| 17 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | ||||||
| 18 | giving notice of the name of the Wyvetter Younge Memorial | ||||||
| 19 | Parkway; and be it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of | ||||||
| 22 | Transportation and the family of State Representative Wyvetter | ||||||
| 23 | Younge.
