| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, After years of mismanagement, the United States | ||||||
| 3 | Department of Housing and Urban
Development made the | ||||||
| 4 | announcement to close the McBride and Elmwood public housing
| ||||||
| 5 | buildings of the Alexander County Housing Authority, rather | ||||||
| 6 | than make any efforts to improve
the living conditions of the | ||||||
| 7 | people who live there; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, It is unjust to evict the families currently | ||||||
| 9 | residing in these housing developments,
many of whom have no | ||||||
| 10 | other place to turn; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, The closure of these housing developments will not | ||||||
| 12 | only cause devastation to the
community of Cairo, but to | ||||||
| 13 | Illinois as a whole, since many families living in these | ||||||
| 14 | housing
developments may choose to leave Southern Illinois or | ||||||
| 15 | the State altogether; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, The Department of Housing and Urban Development is | ||||||
| 17 | shifting responsibility for
the Alexander County Housing | ||||||
| 18 | Authority and putting the families and the people of Cairo at | ||||||
| 19 | risk; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, The Governor must stand up for the people whom he | ||||||
| 21 | represents and take action to help those that are being | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | negatively impacted by the Cairo housing closures; therefore, | ||||||
| 2 | be it
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 4 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 5 | strongly urge the Governor
and the Department of Commerce and | ||||||
| 6 | Economic Opportunity to direct funds that would
allow the | ||||||
| 7 | rebuilding and repair of the Alexander County Housing | ||||||
| 8 | Development in Cairo; and be it further
| ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 10 | presented to the Governor, the Department of Commerce and | ||||||
| 11 | Economic Opportunity, the Alexander County Housing Authority, | ||||||
| 12 | and the McBride and Elmwood public
housing buildings.
