HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Jim
4Tyree; and
5 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of
6Chicago; as a young boy, he delivered the Beverly Review and
7Southtown Economist newspapers; and
8 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree attended St. Barnabas Elementary School
9and Marist High School; he subsequently attended school in the
10City Colleges of Chicago system and at Illinois State
11University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and his
12Master of Business Administration degree; and
13 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree served as chairman and CEO of Mesirow
14Financial and as chairman of Sun-Times Media; he began his
15career at Mesirow, a diversified financial services firm, in
161980; after beginning as a research associate, he was named
17president of the firm in 1990, chief executive officer in 1992
18and chairman and chief executive officer in 1994; under his
19leadership, Mesirow acquired some 50 firms, including the U.S.
20Corporate Recovery practice from KPMG LLP, Dann Insurance, and
21Boockford and Company; in October of 2009, he led an investment
22group that took the parent company of the Chicago Sun-Times and

1dozens of suburban newspapers out of bankruptcy; and
2 WHEREAS, In 2000, Jim Tyree was appointed to serve as board
3chairman of the City Colleges system by Chicago Mayor Richard
4M. Daley; he served in the position with pride and distinction
5for 10 years; he also served on dozens of corporate, civic, and
6not-for-profit boards, including the board of the University of
7Chicago Medical Center; and
8 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree was well known for his great generosity;
9he donated more than $500,000 each year to charities; he also
10championed research on diabetes, a disease that affected him
11during his life; he was named the 2004 Person of the Year by
12the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in recognition of his
13work; and
14 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White
15Sox; and
16 WHEREAS, Jim Tyree is survived by his loving wife, Eve, and
17his children, Jessica, Matthew, and Joseph; therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Jim
21Tyree; and be it further

2presented to the family of Jim Tyree as an expression of our
