| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare | ||||||
| 3 | neurodegenerative disorder caused by the
loss of certain cells | ||||||
| 4 | in the brain and spinal cord resulting in the impairment of the | ||||||
| 5 | body's
involuntary functions, including blood pressure, heart | ||||||
| 6 | rate, bladder function, and digestion; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Having formerly been called Shy-Drager Syndrome, | ||||||
| 8 | MSA shares similar symptoms of
Parkinson's disease, such as | ||||||
| 9 | slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and poor balance; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, People who have MSA also frequently suffer from | ||||||
| 11 | other involuntary functions of the
body, including urinary and | ||||||
| 12 | bowel dysfunction, sweating abnormalities, sleep disorders,
| ||||||
| 13 | difficulty controlling blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, | ||||||
| 14 | cardiovascular problems, and
psychiatric disturbances; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Some people are never accurately diagnosed with | ||||||
| 16 | MSA due to its likeness to
Parkinson's disease; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Though the progression of MSA varies from person | ||||||
| 18 | to person, the condition never
goes into remission and is a | ||||||
| 19 | progressive condition that in due course will lead to death; | ||||||
| 20 | and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of MSA is critical | ||||||
| 2 | to managing symptoms and
maintaining the best possible | ||||||
| 3 | quality-of-life throughout a person's estimated 7-9 year life
| ||||||
| 4 | expectancy, pursuant to their diagnosis; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Increased awareness and exposure to MSA has | ||||||
| 6 | inspired the nation's medical and
scientific communities to | ||||||
| 7 | engage in novel investigative research and treatment | ||||||
| 8 | developments and assemble coalitions that serve patients and | ||||||
| 9 | families through support, education,
advocacy, and financial | ||||||
| 10 | assistance; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, The development of better treatments and, some | ||||||
| 12 | day, a cure will help countless
families avoid tremendous pain | ||||||
| 13 | and loss; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 15 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 16 | we declare March of 2019 as MSA Awareness Month in the State of | ||||||
| 17 | Illinois.
