2 | WHEREAS, Illinois Reads was introduced by the Illinois | ||||||
3 | Reading Council in March 2013; this annual, statewide project | ||||||
4 | promotes reading for all Illinois citizens and is the State's | ||||||
5 | largest reading encouragement program; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Each year, Illinois Reads recommends six books in | ||||||
7 | six different age categories, ranging from infant to adult, and | ||||||
8 | written by authors with ties to Illinois; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Illinois Reads focuses on reading at home and in | ||||||
10 | the classroom; the program also emphasizes summer reading as a | ||||||
11 | way to not only bring the family closer together but to also | ||||||
12 | combat what is known as "summer learning loss" in children; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, As part of Illinois Reads, classrooms, public and | ||||||
14 | school libraries, community groups, and community bookstores | ||||||
15 | throughout the State will feature the titles of 36 books in the | ||||||
16 | six separate age groupings; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Illinois Reads is sponsored by the Illinois | ||||||
18 | Reading Council, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to | ||||||
19 | provide support and leadership to all who promote and teach | ||||||
20 | lifelong literacy; the program works with the Illinois State | ||||||
21 | Library, and State Librarian Jesse White is the Honorary Chair; |

2 | WHEREAS, The 2019 Illinois Reads Book Festival will take | ||||||
3 | place on Saturday, March 16, at the Brookside Campus of | ||||||
4 | Waukegan High School; the culmination is a statewide | ||||||
5 | celebration of literacy during Secretary White's Family | ||||||
6 | Reading Night in November; therefore, be it

7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
8 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
9 | we congratulate the Illinois Reads program on its six years of | ||||||
10 | success, and we support the goals of the program; we urge | ||||||
11 | citizens throughout the State to become involved as Illinois | ||||||
12 | Reads Ambassadors and to support efforts to promote literacy; | ||||||
13 | and be it further

14 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
15 | presented to the Illinois Reading Council.
