2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mayor | ||||||
4 | Jon Arthur Simmons of Vienna, who passed away on January 27, | ||||||
5 | 2021; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons was born in Goreville Township, | ||||||
7 | Johnson County to John and Veneta (Hudgens) Simmons on June | ||||||
8 | 15, 1941; he graduated from Vienna High School in 1959; he was | ||||||
9 | drafted on November 27, 1963, and he served in U.S. Army during | ||||||
10 | the Vietnam War; he was honorably discharged on November 26, | ||||||
11 | 1965; he married Jessie Jean Goins in Vienna on June 22, 2012; | ||||||
12 | and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons became an auctioneer in 1974, and | ||||||
14 | he traveled all over Southern Illinois to conduct auctions; he | ||||||
15 | loved to conduct auctions and visit with auction followers; he | ||||||
16 | also owned and operated Linda's Tavern in Vienna for several | ||||||
17 | years; and

18 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons served as the mayor of the City of | ||||||
19 | Vienna for the past 12 years; he loved Vienna and its people; | ||||||
20 | he was known for always providing a reliable, helping hand to | ||||||
21 | whomever was in need; and

1 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons was a member of Faith Harvest | ||||||
2 | Assembly Church in Vienna; he was a life member of the Saline | ||||||
3 | Masonic Lodge #339 A.F. & A.M. in Goreville, the Beggs-Gurley | ||||||
4 | VFW Post # 5222, and the Ainad Shrine temple; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons was an avid sports and St. Louis | ||||||
6 | Cardinals baseball fan; he loved to attend all sporting | ||||||
7 | events, especially the Vienna Eagles boys and girls basketball | ||||||
8 | games; he was always there for the kids and was their #1 fan; | ||||||
9 | in years past, he enjoyed rabbit and quail hunting; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons was preceded in death by his | ||||||
11 | parents; his brothers, Guy B. Simmons and Max Simmons; and his | ||||||
12 | father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Maude Goins; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Mayor Simmons is survived by his wife and best | ||||||
14 | friend of over 35 years, Jean Simmons; his sons, Frank Towns | ||||||
15 | (Tashia Culp) and Jason (Lisa) Meyer; his grandchildren, Ryker | ||||||
16 | James Towns and Electa Ann Meyer; his brother, Gary Simmons; | ||||||
17 | and his several nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
19 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
20 | we mourn the passing of Mayor Jon Arthur Simmons and extend our | ||||||
21 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
22 | and loved him; and be it further
