1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, All citizens of Illinois should be made aware of | ||||||
3 | the ever-present dangers posed by potentially harmful | ||||||
4 | substances in their home, work, and play environments; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Children too often have access to over the counter | ||||||
6 | and prescription medications and potentially harmful household | ||||||
7 | products; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, the nation has been | ||||||
9 | observing National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW); the Illinois | ||||||
10 | Poison Center celebrates March as Illinois Poison Prevention | ||||||
11 | Month (IPPM) to help prevent unintentional poisonings and to | ||||||
12 | share tips for promoting community involvement in poison | ||||||
13 | prevention; and

14 | WHEREAS, In 2013, the Illinois Poison Center, the oldest | ||||||
15 | and one of the largest poison centers in the nation, will be | ||||||
16 | celebrating its 60th year of providing poison prevention and | ||||||
17 | treatment recommendations to the people of Illinois; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, The Illinois Poison Center is a mainstay in the | ||||||
19 | emergency medical care system of the State of Illinois and is | ||||||
20 | recognized nationally for its contributions to poison | ||||||
21 | treatment and prevention; and

1 | WHEREAS, Nearly 50 percent of the 77,000 poisonings | ||||||
2 | reported last year to the Illinois Poison Center involved | ||||||
3 | children under the age of 5 and which most could have been | ||||||
4 | prevented; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, More than 90 percent of the exposure calls | ||||||
6 | received from the public are treated over the phone, quickly | ||||||
7 | and safely by experienced, expert staff of the poison center | ||||||
8 | rather than in an emergency room; therefore, be it
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
10 | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
11 | we do hereby proclaim March 2013 to be POISON PREVENTION MONTH | ||||||
12 | in THE STATE OF ILLINOIS and congratulate the Illinois Poison | ||||||
13 | Center for providing outstanding public education and | ||||||
14 | treatment advice to the State of Illinois for 60 years; and be | ||||||
15 | it further

16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the Illinois Poison Center.
