2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives and the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn | ||||||
4 | of the death of Daniel L. "Dan" Goodwin, who passed away on | ||||||
5 | January 19, 2024; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, On June 26, 1943, Daniel L. Goodwin was born in | ||||||
7 | Berwyn, Illinois; as a child, he enrolled in the Chicago | ||||||
8 | public schools system and Illinois public universities, | ||||||
9 | receiving a diploma from Lane Tech and a degree from what was | ||||||
10 | then the Illinois Teachers' College - Chicago North; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, With the career goal of being a science teacher, | ||||||
12 | Dan Goodwin earned a master's degree from Northern Illinois | ||||||
13 | University nd set to work as a science teacher in the Chicago | ||||||
14 | Public School system; he was assigned to schools on the West | ||||||
15 | Side of the City of Chicago and worked in the West Side in the | ||||||
16 | 1960s; and

17 | WHEREAS, In the 1960s, Dan Goodwin, his wife, Carol | ||||||
18 | Goodwin, and their colleagues saw the challenges and hopes | ||||||
19 | facing young adults as they searched for safe places to live | ||||||
20 | and raise a family; he and three fellow teachers formed an | ||||||
21 | alliance to acquire, develop, build, and manage real estate; | ||||||
22 | and

1 | WHEREAS, The foursome chose Dan Goodwin to lead what would | ||||||
2 | become The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, Inc.; with | ||||||
3 | one eye on the financial marketplace and the other eye on | ||||||
4 | customer demand, the Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, | ||||||
5 | Inc. moved into commercial real estate development; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Entities, partnerships, and affiliations in which | ||||||
7 | The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, Inc. have been a | ||||||
8 | lynch pin have launched more than 800 separate real estate | ||||||
9 | investment tranches, have led or aided in the development of | ||||||
10 | hundreds of millions of square feet of real estate, have | ||||||
11 | established ties with hundreds of thousands of partners and | ||||||
12 | investors, and have closed more than $80 billion in commercial | ||||||
13 | real estate transactions; and

14 | WHEREAS, By 2024, The Inland Real Estate Group of | ||||||
15 | Companies, Inc. had achieved nationwide market-leadership | ||||||
16 | expertise in leasing, property management, land development, | ||||||
17 | commercial real estate brokerage, commercial real estate | ||||||
18 | finance, property finance, and property investment; and

19 | WHEREAS, By 2024, under its founder, chairman, and CEO Dan | ||||||
20 | Goodwin, The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, | ||||||
21 | headquartered in Oak Brook, was the employer of more than | ||||||
22 | 1,000 Americans across the country, including experts in real |

1 | estate development, real estate management, and real estate | ||||||
2 | finance and investment; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Chairman and CEO Dan Goodwin never forgot his | ||||||
4 | ties to the former Illinois Teachers' College-Chicago North, | ||||||
5 | now known as Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU); NEIU | ||||||
6 | asked their graduate, Dan Goodwin, to sit on their board of | ||||||
7 | trustees; he would chair the NEIU board for 10 years, from 1996 | ||||||
8 | through 2006; in 2016 in honor of his service, NEIU named its | ||||||
9 | College of Education The Daniel L. Goodwin College of | ||||||
10 | Education; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Benedictine University in Lisle developed an even | ||||||
12 | more prolonged interrelationship with Dan Goodwin's life of | ||||||
13 | service; for more than 30 years, he served as vice chairman of | ||||||
14 | Benedictine University; the Daniel L. Goodwin College of | ||||||
15 | Business (GCOB) at Benedictine University currently has 22 | ||||||
16 | faculty members, administrators, and staff, with a | ||||||
17 | career-minded orientation similar to the life pathway that Dan | ||||||
18 | Goodwin himself followed; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Of the hundreds of local and national | ||||||
20 | recognitions accorded to Dan Goodwin, a select list in 2021 | ||||||
21 | for the works of service he had performed up to that time | ||||||
22 | contained more than 40 separate honors and awards, including | ||||||
23 | an unprecedented three separate presentations of the Ethics in |

1 | Business Award by the Better Business Bureau, presented in | ||||||
2 | 2009, 2014, and again in 2017 to The Inland Real Estate Group | ||||||
3 | of Companies, Inc.; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Dan Goodwin never relinquished his passionate | ||||||
5 | support for affordable housing for all Illinois families; he | ||||||
6 | organized the New Directions Housing Corporation, a | ||||||
7 | non-for-profit corporation, that has worked closely with | ||||||
8 | financial partners and tax advisors to finance the | ||||||
9 | construction of housing all over Illinois; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dan Goodwin also served for 10 years on the board | ||||||
11 | of the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) Trust | ||||||
12 | Fund, helping to raise billions of dollars for affordable | ||||||
13 | housing, first-time family housing, and senior housing | ||||||
14 | throughout Illinois; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Constantly fighting for his native State of | ||||||
16 | Illinois, Dan Goodwin served for many years on the board of the | ||||||
17 | Better Government Association (BGA); to honor his service, the | ||||||
18 | BGA renamed the award bestowing its highest honor as the | ||||||
19 | Daniel L. Goodwin Watchdog Award in 2017; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Daniel L. Goodwin died on January 19, 2024 at the | ||||||
21 | age of 80; friends described him as a prolific fundraiser, | ||||||
22 | giver, networker, and friend of enlightened business and |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | thoughtful finance; therefore, be it
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
3 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
4 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we express our profound grief | ||||||
5 | upon the death of Illinois native son, Daniel L. "Dan" | ||||||
6 | Goodwin, and our gratitude for his unprecedented achievements | ||||||
7 | in business and public service; and be it further
