Bill Title: Amends the State Commemorative Dates Act. Provides that August 1 of each year is designated as Sweet Corn Appreciation Day, to be observed throughout the State as a day to celebrate the importance of sweet corn to Illinois agriculture, and in recognition of family farmers.

1 | AN ACT concerning sweet corn.
| |||||||||||||||||||
2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| |||||||||||||||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:
| |||||||||||||||||||
4 | Section 1. Findings. The General Assembly finds and | |||||||||||||||||||
5 | declares the following:
| |||||||||||||||||||
6 | The State of Illinois provides an optimal setting for | |||||||||||||||||||
7 | growing sweet corn with its deep fertile soils, moderate | |||||||||||||||||||
8 | rainfall, and temperate weather making it ideal for high | |||||||||||||||||||
9 | yields and quality. Most of the sweet corn production in the | |||||||||||||||||||
10 | United States happens in the north central region mainly | |||||||||||||||||||
11 | within an area from western Indiana through northern Illinois, | |||||||||||||||||||
12 | and southern Wisconsin and Minnesota. Many family farms plant | |||||||||||||||||||
13 | sweet corn to sell in local farmer's markets across the State, | |||||||||||||||||||
14 | providing high quality, nutritious produce at fair prices. | |||||||||||||||||||
15 | Sweet corn, and its importance to Illinois agriculture and | |||||||||||||||||||
16 | family farmers, deserves recognition and appreciation, and the | |||||||||||||||||||
17 | General Assembly declares that August 1 of each year shall be | |||||||||||||||||||
18 | designated as Sweet Corn Appreciation Day.

19 | Section 5. The State Commemorative Dates Act is amended by | |||||||||||||||||||
20 | adding Section 187 as follows:

22 | Sec. 187. Sweet Corn Appreciation Day. August 1 of each |

1 | year is designated as Sweet Corn Appreciation Day, to be | ||||||
2 | observed throughout the State as a day to celebrate the | ||||||
3 | importance of sweet corn to Illinois agriculture, and in | ||||||
4 | recognition of family farmers.
