Bill Title: Amends the Department of Public Health Act and the School Code. Provides that school districts may serve students produce grown and harvested by students in school-owned or community gardens if the produce meets requirements adopted by rule by the Department of Public Health. Requires the requirements to include, but not be limited to, testing soil and water used in the growing of the produce for contaminants. Makes similar changes to the Article concerning the Chicago school district.

AN ACT concerning education.
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
represented in the General Assembly:
Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
10-20.60 and 34-18.53 as follows:
(105 ILCS 5/10-20.60 new)
Sec. 10-20.60. School-grown produce. A school district may
serve students produce grown and harvested by students in
school-owned facilities utilizing hydroponics or aeroponics or
in school-owned or community gardens if the soil and compost in
which the produce is grown meets the standards adopted in 35
Ill. Adm. Code 830.503, if applicable, and the produce is
served in accordance with the standards adopted in 77 Ill. Adm.
Code 750.

Sec. 34-18.53. School-grown produce. The school district
may serve students produce grown and harvested by students in
school-owned facilities utilizing hydroponics or aeroponics or
in school-owned or community gardens if the soil and compost in
which the produce is grown meets the standards adopted in 35
Ill. Adm. Code 830.503, if applicable, and the produce is
served in accordance with the standards adopted in 77 Ill. Adm.
Code 750.
