SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3
BY KRAAYENBRINK
A Resolution designating February 28, 2023, as
Community College Day.
WHEREAS, the first junior college in Iowa, a
two-year postsecondary educational institution, was
established in Mason City in 1918; and
WHEREAS, credit enrollment in community colleges in
Iowa has increased progressively since their inception,
with nearly 118,000 students taking over 1.5 million
credit hours in the last calendar year; and
WHEREAS, minority enrollment in community colleges
in Iowa continues to increase, with a record high of
24.3 percent recorded in the last academic year; and
WHEREAS, more than 17,000 credit awards were
successfully achieved by students in the last academic
year, and 15.7 percent of students continued their
education at a four-year school after receiving an
award; and
WHEREAS, in the last academic year, the Iowa Skilled
Worker and Job Creation Fund provided training and
support to more than 1,000 Gap Tuition Assistance
Program participants, 2,800 Pathways for Academic
Career and Employment Program (PACE) participants,
and 95,000 teachers and kindergarten through grade
12 students who engaged in work-based learning
opportunities; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
designates February 28, 2023, as Community College Day
to educate others about the success that community

the future for Iowa’s students, workforce, and economy.
