Senate Resolution 111 - Introduced PAG LIN SENATE RESOLUTION NO. BY SCHNEIDER, BEHN, DOTZLER, GARRETT, HART, and KAPUCIAN 1 1 A Resolution in support of strengthening and deepening 1 2 the relationship between Taiwan and the State of 1 3 Iowa. 1 4 WHEREAS, the State of Iowa is proud of the 1 5 sister=state relationship it has enjoyed with Taiwan 1 6 since 1989, which is marked by strong bilateral trade, 1 7 educational and cultural exchanges, and tourism; and 1 8 WHEREAS, Taiwan shares with the United States 1 9 and the State of Iowa the common values of freedom, 1 10 democracy, and human rights, and a commitment to the 1 11 rule of law; and 1 12 WHEREAS, the United States ranks as Taiwan's 1 13 second=largest trading partner, and Taiwan is the 1 14 United States' 10th largest trading partner, with total 1 15 bilateral trade reaching $68.2 billion in 2017; and 1 16 WHEREAS, Taiwan and the State of Iowa have enjoyed 1 17 a long and mutually beneficial relationship and 1 18 anticipate continuing growth, with Taiwan ranking 1 19 as Iowa's 5th largest export destination in Asia 1 20 in 2017, with $171 million worth of Iowa goods 1 21 shipped to Taiwan, including food, machinery, 1 22 chemicals, miscellaneous manufactured commodities, and 1 23 agricultural products; and 1 24 WHEREAS, negotiations for a bilateral trade 1 25 agreement between Taiwan and the United States are an 1 26 important step toward further strengthening bilateral 1 27 trade between the State of Iowa and Taiwan, thereby 2 1 increasing Iowa's exports to Taiwan and creating 2 2 bilateral investment and technical collaboration 2 3 through tariff reduction and other trade facilitation 2 4 measures; and 2 5 WHEREAS, Taiwan has undertaken a policy of 2 6 "steadfast diplomacy" regarding international 2 7 relations and is capable of and willing to fulfill its 2 8 responsibilities and to collaborate with the world to 2 9 deal with the challenges of humanitarian aid, disease 2 10 control, and other important issues; NOW THEREFORE, 2 11 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 12 reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the 2 13 sister=state relationship between Taiwan and the 2 14 State of Iowa; endorses Taiwan's efforts to secure the 2 15 signing of a bilateral trade agreement with the United 2 16 States; and reaffirms support for increasing Taiwan's 2 17 international profile; and 2 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of 2 19 the Senate is hereby directed to send copies of this 2 20 Resolution to the members of Iowa's congressional 2 21 delegation and to the Taipei Economic and Cultural 2 22 Office in Chicago, Illinois.
