WHEREAS,
the
profession
of
utility
workers
is

steeped
in
personal,
family,
and
professional
4
tradition;
and
5
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
are
often
first
responders
6
during
storms
and
other
catastrophic
events,
working
7
to
make
the
scene
safe
for
their
fellow
public
safety
8
heroes;
and
9
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
work
with
thousands
of
10
volts
of
electricity
high
atop
power
lines
24
hours
per
11
day,
365
days
a
year;
and
12
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
keep
electricity
flowing
by
13
working
in
deep
trenches,
welding
gas
lines
to
seal
or
14
make
repairs,
performing
leak
detection,
and
ensuring
15
pipeline
integrity
to
safely
deliver
natural
gas
to
16
customers;
and
17
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
ensure
that
our
water
18
supply
is
safe
and
reliable
and
that
our
wastewater
is
19
cleaned
before
re-entering
Iowa’s
waterways;
and
20
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
such
as
wind
turbine
21
technicians,
power
plant
operators,
line
clearance
tree
22
trimmers,
distributors,
and
dispatchers
work
around
the
23
clock
to
keep
our
generation
plants,
wind
turbines,
and
24
solar
energy
sites
operating
efficiently
and
ensuring
25
the
flow
of
energy
to
businesses,
homes,
and
factories
26
even
during
the
worst
disasters;
and
27
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
must
often
work
under

dangerous
conditions
far
from
their
families
to
1
construct
and
maintain
the
energy
infrastructure
of
the
2
state
of
Iowa,
especially
during
the
Iowa
derecho
in
3
August
2020
and
throughout
the
COVID-19
pandemic,
and
4
utility
workers
have
continued
to
maintain
the
state
5
infrastructure
despite
all
the
obstacles
with
which
6
they
are
confronted;
and
7
WHEREAS,
utility
workers
put
their
lives
on
the
line
8
every
day
with
little
recognition
from
the
community
9
regarding
the
danger
of
their
work;
NOW
THEREFORE,
10
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
11
designates
March
8,
annually,
as
Utility
Worker
12
Appreciation
Day,
and
calls
upon
the
people
of
Iowa
13
to
be
particularly
mindful
of
the
dangerous
work
14
done
under
extreme
conditions
day
in
and
day
out
by
15
these
dedicated
public
safety
workers
and
show
their
16
appreciation
at
every
opportunity.
