Section 261.113, subsection 3, paragraph d, Code 1 2 2016, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 d. Within nine months of graduating from the residency 1 4 program and receiving a permanent license in accordance with 1 5 paragraph "b", engage in the full=time practice of medicine 1 6 and surgery or osteopathic medicine and surgery specializing 1 7 in family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, internal medicine, 1 8 emergency medicine, or general surgery for a period of five 1 9 consecutive years in the service commitment area specified 1 10 under subsection 6, unless the loan repayment recipient 1 11 receives a waiver from the commission to complete the years 1 12 of practice required under the agreement in another service 1 13 commitment area pursuant to subsection 6. 1 14 Sec. 2. Section 261.113, subsection 8, Code 2016, is amended 1 15 to read as follows: 1 16 8. Part=time practice == agreement amended. A person who 1 17 entered into an agreement pursuant to subsection 3 may apply 1 18 to the commission to amend the agreement to allow the person 1 19 to engage in less than the full=time practice specified in 1 20 the agreement and under subsection 3, paragraph "d". If the 1 21 commission determines exceptional circumstances exist, the 1 22 commission and the person may consent to amend the agreement 1 23 under which the person shall engage in less than full=time 1 24 practice of medicine and surgery or osteopathic medicine 1 25 and surgery specializing in family medicine, pediatrics, 1 26 psychiatry, internal medicine, emergency medicine, or general 1 27 surgery in a service commitment area for an extended period 1 28 of part=time practice determined by the commission to be 1 29 proportional to the amount of full=time practice remaining 1 30 under the original agreement. 1 31 EXPLANATION 1 32 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 1 33 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly. 1 34 This bill relates to the requirements for eligibility for 1 35 participation in the rural Iowa primary care loan repayment 2 1 program. The bill adds emergency medicine to the list of 2 2 specialties in which an individual may engage for a period 2 3 of five consecutive years in a service commitment area to 2 4 be eligible for the program.
