The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with

the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
relates
to
the
ordering
and
administering
7
of
epinephrine
auto-injectors
by
a
pharmacist
without
a
8
prescription,
subject
to
statewide
protocols
and
other
9
requirements.

The
bill
provides
that
in
accordance
with
statewide
11
protocols
developed
by
the
board
of
pharmacy
in
consultation
12
with
the
department
of
health
and
human
services,
a
pharmacist
13
may
order
and
administer
an
epinephrine
auto-injector
to
14
a
person
who
is
at
least
18
years
of
age.
Current
Code
15
section
155A.46(2)
requires
that
a
pharmacist
ordering
16
and
administering
prescription
drugs,
products,
tests,
and
17
treatments
under
the
statewide
protocols
shall
do
all
of
the
18
following:
maintain
a
record
of
all
prescription
drugs,
19
products,
tests,
and
treatments
administered
pursuant
to
20
the
bill;
notify
the
patient’s
primary
health
care
provider
21
of
any
prescription
drugs,
products,
tests,
or
treatments
22
administered
to
the
patient,
or
enter
such
information
in
a
23
patient
record
system
also
used
by
the
primary
health
care
24
provider,
as
permitted
by
the
primary
health
care
provider;
25
if
the
patient
does
not
have
a
primary
health
care
provider,
26
provide
the
patient
with
a
written
record
of
the
prescription
27
drugs,
products,
tests,
or
treatment
provided
to
the
patient
28
and
advise
the
patient
to
consult
a
physician;
and
complete
29
continuing
pharmacy
education
related
to
statewide
protocols.
