Section
1.
Section
279.10,
subsection
1,
Code
2020,
is
1
amended
to
read
as
follows:

1.
a.
The
school
year
for
each
school
district
and
3
accredited
nonpublic
school
shall
begin
on
July
1
and
the
4
school
calendar
shall
begin
no
sooner
than
August
23
and
no
5
later
than
the
first
Monday
in
December.
The
school
calendar
6
shall
include
not
less
than
one
hundred
eighty
days
or
one
7
thousand
eighty
hours
of
instruction
during
the
calendar
year.
8
The
board
of
directors
of
a
school
district
and
the
authorities
9
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
school
shall
determine
the
10
school
start
date
for
the
school
calendar
in
accordance
with
11
this
subsection
and
shall
set
the
number
of
days
or
hours
of
12
required
attendance
for
the
school
year
as
provided
in
section
13
299.1,
subsection
2
,
but
the
board
of
directors
of
a
school
14
district
shall
hold
a
public
hearing
on
any
proposed
school
15
calendar
prior
to
adopting
the
school
calendar.

(1)
If
the
board
of
directors
of
a
school
district
17
or
the
authorities
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
18
school
extends
the
school
calendar
because
inclement
weather
19
caused
the
school
district
or
accredited
nonpublic
school
to
20
temporarily
close
during
the
regular
school
calendar,
the
21
school
district
or
accredited
nonpublic
school
may
excuse
a
22
graduating
senior
who
has
met
district
or
school
requirements
23
for
graduation
from
attendance
during
the
extended
school
24
calendar.

Day
shall
not
be
used
to
26
meet
the
instructional
time
requirements
of
paragraph
“a”
27
in
the
event
inclement
weather
causes
the
school
district
28
or
accredited
nonpublic
school
to
close
during
the
regular

school
calendar.
It
is
the
intent
of
the
general
assembly
to
30
encourage
school
districts
and
accredited
nonpublic
schools
31
that
hold
instructional
hours
on
Dr.
Martin
Luther
King,
Jr.
32
Day
to
use
the
time
to
provide
instruction
and
activities
33
relating
to
citizenship
and
service
learning
to
students.

c.
A
school
corporation
may
begin
employment
of
personnel

training

development
purposes
before
the

date
to
begin
elementary
and
secondary
school.

this

This
bill
prohibits
the
use
of
Dr.
Martin
Luther
King,
Jr.

Day
as
an
instructional
day
in
the
event
inclement
weather
7
causes
a
school
to
close
during
the
regular
school
calendar.

If
a
school
district
or
accredited
nonpublic
school
holds
a
9
minimum
day
of
instruction
on
the
holiday,
the
bill
expresses
10
the
intent
of
the
general
assembly
that
the
school
use
the
time
11
to
provide
instruction
and
activities
relating
to
citizenship
12
and
service
learning
to
students.
