S.R. NO.

TWENTY-NINTH LEGISLATURE, 2017

S.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING APRIL 15 THROUGH APRIL 22, 2018, AS VOLUNTEER WEEK IN THE STATE OF HAWAII.

WHEREAS, President Richard Nixon first designated National Volunteer Week by Presidential Proclamation 4288 in 1974 to recognize and encourage people to engage in their community through volunteer service; and

WHEREAS, National Volunteer Week works to inspire, equip, and mobilize people to take actions that can change the world; and

WHEREAS, individuals and communities are at the center of social change, discovering their power to make a difference; and

WHEREAS, during National Volunteer Week, service projects will be performed across America and volunteers will be recognized for their commitment to service; and

WHEREAS, KANU Hawaii, a local non-profit organization, with its more than 15,000 registered members, seeks to annualize attention to this week of service for the purpose of growing connections between volunteers and local businesses, local non-profit organizations, and community organizations; and

WHEREAS, the giving of oneself in service to another empowers the giver and the recipient, and experience teaches that government by itself cannot solve all of the issues facing the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the United States of America volunteer force of over 63,000,000 is a great treasure, and those who volunteer play a vital role in the community and in the United States' future as a caring and productive nation; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate that this body proclaim the week of April 15 through April 22, 2018, as Volunteer Week in the State of Hawaii in conjunction with the observance of National Volunteer Week; and

WHEREAS, establishing Volunteer Week in the State of Hawaii will help encourage volunteerism and the spirit of giving during National Volunteer Week and will create a greater call to action that encourages residents to spread the philanthropic spirit; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body recognizes April 15 through April 22, 2018, as Volunteer Week in the State of Hawaii, in conjunction with the observance of National Volunteer Week; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Executive Director of KANU Hawaii.
