SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

recognizing and celebrating the world indigenous nations higher education consortium accreditation of ka haka ula o keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language at the university of hawaii at hilo.

 

 


     WHEREAS, Act 315, Session Laws of Hawaii 1997, established a Hawaiian language college with undergraduate and graduate study, teacher certification, indigenous language outreach, and a Hawaiian language support center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaiian language college at the University of Hawaii at Hilo was later officially named Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani in honor of Ruth Keelikolani Keanolani Kanahoahoa, a nineteenth century governor of the Island of Hawaii known for her strong advocacy of Hawaiian language and culture; and

 

     WHEREAS, the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium provides an international forum and support for indigenous peoples to pursue common goals through higher education; and

 

     WHEREAS, the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium accredits indigenous institutions and programs of higher education; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2009, Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani was awarded full accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium; and

 

     WHEREAS, Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani was the first college in the United States within a mainstream institution to be awarded World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium accreditation; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2010, the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium awarded accreditation to the P-20 Hawaiian Mauli Ola Education System at Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani; this was the first time that the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium awarded accreditation to a preschool to graduate school program; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaiian Mauli Ola Education System is unique and distinct in its use of Hawaiian as the language of instruction, administration, and socialization; and

 

     WHEREAS, this program has produced outstanding academic achievements amongst its students and has a proven record of producing college- and career-ready high school graduates; and

 

     WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani are the culmination of over thirty years of actions by people and organizations in Hawaii, including speakers of Hawaiian, descendents of speakers of Hawaiian, and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, who supported the inclusion of Hawaiian language and culture throughout Hawaii's educational system; and

 

     WHEREAS, international accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium recognizes Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language's success in revitalizing the Hawaiian language and in creating an educational model from which other indigenous peoples may learn and be inspired; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the House of Representatives concurring, that Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaii at Hilo be recognized for its accomplishment of preschool to graduate school accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature join with the fifty-first convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in recognizing the preschool to graduate school accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium as an achievement of special significance to members of the Hawaiian Civic Clubs who have steadfastly supported the Hawaiian language and to the people of Hawaii who have supported the unique mission of Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature join with the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, the families, faculty, and staff of Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani in celebrating the preschool to graduate school accreditation by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani Hawaiian Language College at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, President of the University of Hawaii System, Chair of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, and Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
