STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

Urging the aloha tower development corporation to develop a plan to relocate, RENOVATE, upgrade, reopen, or demolish the Hawaii maritime museum Building and the nearby areas so that pier 7 may serve as an attraction of the Aloha Tower Complex.

WHEREAS, the Aloha Tower Complex on the island of Oahu is the State's focal point for cruise and interisland ship activity; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Maritime Center, located at pier 7 of the Aloha Tower Complex, was once the principal maritime museum in the State and featured Hawaii's ocean legacy, including information on ancient Hawaiians who navigated the ocean, ships of Hawaii's whaling era, the ocean liner golden age, and modern ocean sports; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Maritime Center's exhibits and attractions once included the skeleton of a humpback whale, the remains of a 1,805 pound Pacific Blue Marlin, a replica of a Polynesian sailing canoe, and the Falls of Clyde, the only remaining iron-hulled, four-masted full-rigged ship in the world; and

WHEREAS, on May 1, 2009, the Bishop Museum closed the Hawaii Maritime Center and the building has remained closed to the public since; and

WHEREAS, the Aloha Tower Development Corporation was established in 1981 to develop the Aloha Tower Complex, including featuring and enhancing the physical, public use, and visual characteristics of the historic Aloha Tower; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Aloha Tower Development Corporation is urged to develop a plan to relocate, renovate, upgrade, reopen, develop, or demolish the Hawaii Maritime Center and the nearby areas so that pier 7 may serve as an attraction of the Aloha Tower Complex; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Aloha Tower Development Corporation is urged to work with the Department of Transportation, the Bishop Museum, the Friends of Falls of Clyde, and other interested parties in developing the plan; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Aloha Tower Development Corporation is urged to submit its plan and proposed legislation, if any, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the Regular Session of 2016; and
