RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THAT jULY 31 OF EVERY YEAR BE RECOGNIZED AND PROCLAIMED AS LA HO‘IHO‘I EA.
WHEREAS, La Ho‘iho‘i Ea translates to Restoration Day and marks the day that independence was restored to the Hawaiian Kingdom on July 31, 1843, after being forcefully seized by Lord George Paulet, a captain in the British Royal Navy; and
WHEREAS, recognizing that the Kingdom of Hawaii was a sovereign state, Queen Victoria sent Admiral Richard Darton Thomas of the British Royal Navy to redress the unwarranted transgression against the Hawaiian Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, July 31 commemorates the end of the unauthorized five-month military occupation; and
WHEREAS, King Kamehameha III established this holiday in a days-long celebration following the rightful return of sovereignty to the Kingdom of Hawaii, officially proclaiming, "Ua Mau ke ea o ka ‘āina i ka pono", meaning the ea--or breath, life, and sovereignty--of the land is perpetuated through justice; and
WHEREAS, the Senate of the State of Hawaii recognizes that there is a need to honor, support, and cherish this significant day in Hawaii's history; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature and Governor are requested to recognize and acknowledge the historical and cultural significance of La Ho‘iho‘i Ea; and
