SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

URGing the university of hawaii board of regents to name the library building at the university of hawaii west oahu campus after gene i. awakuni.

 

 

     WHEREAS, Gene Awakuni joined the University of Hawaii as chancellor of the West Oahu campus in March 2005; and

 

     WHEREAS, prior to joining the University of Hawaii, Gene Awakuni served as vice provost at Stanford University, as vice president of student services at Columbia University, and as an administrator at Cal Poly Pomona, University of California-Santa Barbara, and University of California-Irvine; and

 

WHEREAS, since joining the University of Hawaii, Gene Awakuni has demonstrated incredible resolve while taking on the task of transforming the University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus from portable classroom units located on the corner of the Leeward Community College campus to a beautiful modern campus in Kapolei; and

 

     WHEREAS, in constructing the West Oahu campus, Gene Awakuni was able to overcome serious financial challenges through innovative and entrepreneurial ideas, as well as working collaboratively with contractors, subcontractors, and community partners to achieve the goal of providing a convenient center of higher education in the region; and

 

     WHEREAS, according to University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood, the construction of the University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus "is one of the most important projects for higher education in the entire State"; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, the House of Representatives concurring, that the University of Hawaii Board of Regents is urged to name the library building at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus after Gene I. Awakuni; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, President of the University of Hawaii System, and the Chancellor of the University of Hawaii-West Oahu.
