STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

Urging the board of education to include education in more subject areas in all public schools.

WHEREAS, a full and well-rounded education better prepares a student for future opportunities in the workforce and community; and

WHEREAS, a full and well-rounded education includes art, music, physical fitness, financial literacy, civics, community service, job preparation and entrepreneurship opportunities, cultural appreciation, family caregiving, and parenting skills; and

WHEREAS, physical education offers children knowledge on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity to develop healthy eating habits, release energy and stress, and learn various exercise or sports techniques; and

WHEREAS, education in the arts and music can have significant impacts on child development, including improved motor skills development, language development, decision making skills, visual learning, inventiveness, and cultural awareness; and

WHEREAS, community service experiences have the potential to enrich classroom learning, demonstrate the relevance and importance of academic work to life experiences and career choices, increase awareness of social issues, improve interpersonal skills, and develop civic responsibility; and

WHEREAS, an education that includes financial literacy, civics, and life skills helps students acquire and practice some of the basic skills they will need as they mature into young adults; and

WHEREAS, despite the benefits that education in these subject areas offer, many of these courses are not offered in all public schools in the State; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Board of Education is urged to include education in art, music, physical fitness, financial literacy, civics, community service, job preparation and entrepreneurship opportunities, cultural appreciation, family caregiving, and parenting skills in all public schools; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Education.
