A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to the university of hawaii.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the state department of health has reported over sixty cases of rat lungworm disease in the past ten years.  The disease has claimed lives and caused crippling chronic illness.  The Hawaii island rat lungworm disease working group has been formed at the Daniel K. Inouye college of pharmacy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.  The working group has been conducting research and educational outreach on the disease for the past three years.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $10,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2015-2016 for the development of an integrated pest management plan and STEM curriculum for school students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, and to complete a water filter study to determine the filter size required to prevent rat lungworm larvae from entering a catchment system, household water supply.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii at Hilo for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2015.
