THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

3023

THIRTIETH LEGISLATURE, 2020

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to kaneohe bay.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The Hawaii institute of marine biology on Coconut Island receives a large number of requests for internships every year.  However, the institute has no single position dedicated to providing a cohesive internship program that can support teachers and students making these inquiries.  Such a program could leverage numerous other opportunities that may be available to these students as they begin their careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.  Since many of these potential applicants are working their way through college, a paid internship would facilitate the individual's commitment to the Hawaii institute of marine biology and help elicit a healthy competition among University of Hawaii students seeking a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 for:

     (1)  One full-time equivalent position (1.0 FTE) to serve as internship coordinator for the Hawaii institute of marine biology by organizing internship opportunities and providing support for teachers and students; and

     (2)  One and one third full-time equivalent position (1.3 FTE) for a cultural resource specialist position for the University of Hawaii School of ocean and earth science and technology Hawaii, institute for marine biology at the Heeia National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2020.
