S.B. NO.

2484

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2010

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to native hawaiians.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that a successful, sustainable tourism industry in Hawaii honors Hawaii's host culture, its people and their history; protects its unique natural environment; and engages local communities.  People from all over the world representing many different cultures have made Hawaii their home and have helped to make Hawaii a top visitor destination.  However, native Hawaiians and the native Hawaiian culture are what continue to make Hawaii unique and different from other destinations around the world.

The purpose of this Act is to strengthen the relationship between the State, the visitor industry, and the native Hawaiian community.

SECTION 2.  (a)  The office of Hawaiian affairs shall develop and maintain a database to collect information on how state, county, and private entities within the tourism industry are incorporating native Hawaiian culture into their operations.  The database shall include:

     (1)  Programs and activities related to the visitor industry; and

     (2)  Activities promoted by local organizations and community groups to organize native Hawaiians and disseminate information about native Hawaiian culture.

     (b)  The office of Hawaiian affairs shall coordinate with the Hawaii tourism authority and the native Hawaiian hospitality association for information relating to the visitor industry.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2010.
