A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to minimum wage.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 46, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§46-    Minimum wage; reduced minimum wage for minors.  Each county may adopt ordinances establishing a minimum wage rate that is greater than or equal to the minimum wage provided in section 387-2; provided that the minimum wage rate for minors under the age of eighteen shall be at least eighty per cent of the county minimum wage rate."

     SECTION 2.  Section 387-2, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by amending subsection (a) to read as follows:

     "(a)  Except as provided in section 387‑9 and this section, every employer shall pay to each employee employed by the employer, wages at the rate of not less than:

     (1)  $6.25 per hour beginning January 1, 2003;

     (2)  $6.75 per hour beginning January 1, 2006;

     (3)  $7.25 per hour beginning January 1, 2007;

     (4)  $7.75 per hour beginning January 1, 2015;

     (5)  $8.50 per hour beginning January 1, 2016;

     (6)  $9.25 per hour beginning January 1, 2017; [and]

     (7)  $10.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2018[.];

     (8)  $11.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2019;

     (9)  $12.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2020;

    (10)  $13.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2021;

    (11)  $14.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2022; and

    (12)  $15.10 per hour beginning January 1, 2023;

provided that each county may adopt ordinances establishing a county minimum wage rate and reduced minimum wage rate pursuant to section 46‑   that, if higher than the minimum wage rate established by this subsection, shall supersede the applicable minimum wage rate established by this subsection for that county."

     SECTION 3.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.

Report Title:

Minimum Wage; Counties

 

Description:

Allows the counties to set a county minimum wage at a rate higher than the state minimum wage rate and a reduced county minimum wage rate for minors under eighteen that is at least 80 percent of the county minimum wage rate.  Increases the minimum wage by $1.00 each year until 2023 to reach $15.10 per hour.
